Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Jensen.
Hi Katie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
UpSpring’s mission is to empower children experiencing homelessness in Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky by providing opportunities through education and enrichment. Our vision is to positively transform our communities by breaking the cycle of homelessness and poverty. UpSpring empowers the lives of over 4,000 local children experiencing homelessness each year. Since our founding in 1998, we’ve elevated more than 45,000 children experiencing homelessness.
UpSpring is the only local nonprofit organization dedicated to serving the educational needs of children experiencing homelessness. We continue to grow, always striving to serve more children in the region. Throughout the year, we are able to serve over 4,000 students in Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky (Hamilton, Kenton, Boone, and Campbell Counties).
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There are always ups and downs with nonprofit work! UpSpring has a proven track-record of success over the last 24 years, and we look forward to continuing our work as long as it is needed.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
UpSpring is a reputable organization that has served homeless children for over 24 years. As the region’s only local non-profit that focuses exclusively on the educational needs of children experiencing homelessness, UpSpring has significant experience with and a deep understanding of this population, the educational issues they face, and the most effective ways to assist in their education. Our programs are rooted in trauma-informed care, with the belief that just one positive relationship can change a child’s life.
The children we serve are all experiencing homelessness in Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky; all are living below the federal poverty level. They range in age from 5-18. The racial demographics are approximately 50% Black, 40% white, and 10% bi-racial/other.
Homeless children are more likely to have a high number of Adverse Childhood Experiences, which are correlated with negative physical and mental health outcomes in childhood and adulthood. UpSpring’s overarching goal is to provide these students with the tools necessary to survive and thrive no matter these adversities. Our success has proven that our approach works; students are doing better in school and are reporting that they are happier and healthier.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
We were able to continue our services during covid, implementing virtual and hybrid programs. We knew our kids still needed us, and we found a way to be there!
