Conversations with Kathy Vogel

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathy Vogel.

Hi Kathy, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I got started in the radio business in my teens. Acting was my focus, but there was something about radio that I always loved. I’m a music lover, and I love stories– whether sharing my own, or hearing about others. When I started in the business, my goal was to be a morning show personality. Fortunately, it happened quite quickly for me. I’ve been blessed to work in the business ever since my youth. Throughout the years, I’ve branched out as an actress, voice-over artist, and creator of the online information source– Crack Wise Magazine (www.crackwisemag.com). The goal of Crack Wise is to share “funformation”– fun information or information with a fun twist, snark, funny asides, etc.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No way. There are so many challenges in the entertainment business, whether it’s radio, TV, film, print. When I first started out, I was considered the “cute girl” that needed to sit in the corner and be pretty. Had I not found my voice and spoken up for myself, who knows where I’d be today. I knew I had the talent and ambition and work ethic and deserved to be in the room. As a female and a minority, the challenges are greater. Those challenges still exist, and I’m not certain they will ever go away. So, my focus is on how I can impact my medium positively, and how can I overcome– how can I be an example for those coming up in the business. If things were easier, I wouldn’t be who I am today. Struggle makes for growth, and that’s never a bad thing.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m proud of the little victories that are huge to me. In 2012, I wrote the script for a short film entitled “Encryption” that won Best Film at the Canton Film festival. This film also went on the short-film circuit throughout the country. I also co-starred in the film. It was an amazing experience. That same year, I was in an indie Faith-based film, Old Fashioned– my first true Hollywood production. I will never forget how that film positively impacted my life. Scriptwriting is a passion of mine. I try to squeeze in some writing time when I’m not doing the radio thing or creating content for Crack Wise. I’m also the person like to come to for ideas, because my brain works a little differently, so my ideas can seem off-the-wall, but that’s what makes projects stand out!

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Keeping moving forward. There have been times when you just want to lie down and quit. But then I say to myself: “If I take just one more step, this could be the one that gets me to where I want to be.” I feel that no matter the challenges or setbacks or heartbreaks, as long as I’m breathing air I have the chance to accomplish my goals. Never lose hope. Never lose that belief in yourself.
