Today we’d like to introduce you to Karla Young.
Karla, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
As an art teacher in the public schools, I am often asked about private art lessons for children. Unfortunately, there isn’t a lot offered in the area for kids who enjoy the arts. So, in 2018 I decided to start offering small group art lessons in my home–something I had once done years ago as a stay-at-home mom. Over the next few years, the demand for lessons continued to grow and become more than my house could handle. I decided to find a commercial space to rent and opened the doors to 110 W Chestnut Street in downtown Lancaster in October 2021. When I was handed the key, I had 30 students enrolled. Within 6 months, enrollment had grown to 130 students. One year later, we now offer 17 classes per week ranging from age 5 to adults with a total of 5 instructors. We also offer canvas painting parties and have a very popular Splatter Studio.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to becoming a small business owner has required a lot of time and hard work, but I’m passionate about sharing my love of art with others and have enjoyed every minute. I’ve received amazing support and guidance along the way, and the community has fully embraced us and what we offer.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We offer classes for ages 5-6, 7-11, 12-17, and adults. Classes meet one hour per week with a maximum of 10 students per class. We focus primarily on drawing and painting while teaching the elements of art. Students often come to class as strangers and leave as friends. We offer canvas painting parties by appointment for groups of 8 or more. And we have a Splatter Studio, which is unique to this area. People put on the provided protective gear (poncho, shower cap, and shoe covers) and splatter paint a 16×20″ masterpiece on canvas.
The power of art brings people together, and it’s a beautiful thing to be a part of.
What do you think about happiness?
The studio is filled with students who want to come and create. Seeing them get excited about a new concept or technique makes me happy! Watching them problem-solve, explore their ideas, and take pride in their work brings such a sense of fulfillment. One young student recently said, “You know the worst part about art lessons? Having to leave and wait a whole 7 days to come back!”
