Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Stout.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I worked for a University as an Academic Advisor for 8 years. Burned out in the office life, I pursued my passion for the arts. In 2017 I curated and managed the BLINK Festival’s light-based installations and parade along with Marie Krulewitch-Browne. That event brought in muralists from around the world via Agar. I had just enough ego to think I could make murals as well, so I pursued it aggressively. Started offering murals at cost, and slowly turned that into a career.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like most artists, it’s a constant struggle. How do you make money consistently? How do you grow your audience? How do you find ways to stay creative and true to yourself?
The artist life is a beautiful life. It’s can also be heartbreaking.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a muralist and illustrator. I specialize in large-scale murals that are bright, colorful, and cartoonish in nature. Fun, inclusive murals both exterior and interior.
I also specialize in sports themed illustration. I have garnered a small, but loyal following on the weekly unofficial Cincinnati Bengals game day illustrations I make. These illustrations have led me to official illustration opportunities with the Bengals, Broncos, and NFL Network.
What matters most to you? Why?
Making fun art that I like. I want to offer a moment of joy to viewers of my work. Life is tough, I aim to make art that alleviates that for a second or two.
