Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Lacy.
Hi Jordan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
My name is Jordan, and I’m a hairstylist from Akron, Ohio. My journey started as young as 13, shampooing hairs in salons and spending every Saturday in the salon just watching. During high school, I took the cosmetology vocation only getting in because another girl decided to drop the class. I obtained my license in 2013. I started off doing hair in my shared room between two twin beds in a one-bedroom apartment. Over the years, I worked at a couple salons, but none of them really stick or fit me. I always said I never wanted to open my own salon; too much responsibility, too many bills, and I felt like I couldn’t fill the shoes of such a big position. God decided he had different plans for me. October of 2020, I opened my own salon MG Studio. I have my own lip gloss and lash line “MG Collection,” where all my glosses are handmade and pre-filled by me, and I also have my own hairline “TPC (The Prime Collection). I’ve had my license and have been doing hair for 10 Years now. Eventually, my goal is to move out of state and have my own salon but BETTER. I want my lip gloss to be something that all the girls own, and eventually, I plan on being a worldwide hair supplier.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
NO! It has not. I really had to learn myself and how to really adjust as a stylist. Dealing with different women and perfecting my craft alone was a challenge. Then becoming a salon owner was a totally different ball game. It’s really only me, so when it came to actually getting my salon together, I did everything myself. I spent down to the last dollar in my savings and had to just hope it came back. I had to learn how to manage my money and pay bills first because as easy as the money comes it goes! Another struggle I deal with daily is being the stylist, the content creator, and the advertisement. All while being a mom at the same time. Everything falls on me so there is a lot of pressure.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a hairstylist and salon owner. I specialize in natural hair, updos, extensions, and maintaining the health of all of my client’s hair. I am most proud of taking the leap of faith that I did and opening up my own salon. That was the scariest experience, and I didn’t think I could do it, but I did. What sets me apart from others is that I actually care about and take pride of the health of my client’s hair. I try to find ways to make me better every single day so I can be better for my clients. Every client doesn’t get the same shampoo/products because every client’s hair is not the same. I’m not just the stylist to do a style for the money; if I feel like your hair isn’t in the best condition for a style, I’ll tell you. If I feel like you could save money or get the same style at a cheaper cost (ex: a pronto instead of a sew-in), I’ll suggest it! Always leaving it up to my client of course, I just want to educate them and give advice because I’d want the same done for me. It’s important to me not to leave any clients unsatisfied. I provide excellent service, only taking one client at a time and having my clients in and out. With it only being me in my salon my clients get the one-on-one time they deserve, plus the comfort of not being in front of a lot of people. If I make a mistake, I am quick to accommodate. I advise clients on what I suggest is best for their hair and come up with a plan to keep it on the right path. Last but not least, I listen; not only am I a hair stylist, but I’m a shoulder to cry on and a therapist for a lot of my clients.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I believe in luck, but I mostly believe in God! I believe everything happens for a reason, and I don’t think I’m lucky; everything I have I EARNED; nothing fell in my lap. Nothing was easy. Nothing, absolutely nothing, was given to me! Every trial is for a greater you, I’ve had times where I’ve been down, but now when I look back, it was a lesson in it all. I don’t think good/bad luck had a role to play in my life and business, I just took the cards I were dealt and played the best with what I had.
