Conversations with Jonathan Blount

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Blount

Hi Jonathan, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was introduced to photography at a young age by my father who was an avid amateur photographer, but was skilled at his hobby and passed that gene on to me. I didn’t pick it up personally until 2020 when I purchased a Canon mirrorless camera. I originally purchased the camera to help me film video for a venture I had in men’s style influencing, but after the pandemic hit, I was unable to do many of the things that I had previously done in that space. So, since I had the camera, I decided to learn to use it for photography to help pass the time at home. I quickly became, for lack of a better term, obsessed with the world of photography. I quickly purchased a used macro lens made in the early 1990’s and a telephoto lens with an optical range of 55-250mm and this really got me started in the world of macro photography and nature & wildlife photography. In 2021 I got my first paid client, a local entrepreneur who asked me to take some pictures of his business that he could use for social media purposes. Then my church asked me to produce a video for them, celebrating their 150 year anniversary. This is about the time I really started taking my photography more seriously. I began to understand the editing process and realized that editing on an iPhone using the standard photo app was not ideal. I kept on doing research, trying to learn as much as I could about aperture, noise, technology, exposure, composition, metering, etc. I would go hiking with my camera and photograph anything that looked interesting. My photographs steadily improved as a result. It has been within the last year that I have really begun to feel like my photography is pretty good, and others have noticed as well. I am by no means an expert, but I do feel as though I am skilled at what I do.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There are always struggles on every journey. On this journey, the main struggle is how to stand out in a world that is flooded with images. Also, trying to fund the venture in a responsible way without going into debt. All things considered, I have never really felt very frustrated. I have enjoyed the journey and continue to enjoy the journey.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a photographer specializing in nature, wildlife, and macro photography. I am most proud of the fact that I am able to capture beautiful photographs without using the newest, best, or even “correct” gear and technology. I believe my editing style and composition sets me apart from others in this space.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Not to compare my photographs to others, but rather to compare my photographs to my photographs. It is about constantly improving, striving to be the best that you can possibly be. There are going to be days where you shoot 1000 photographs, but only 5-10 may be usable (at best), getting on instagram and seeing the absolute best that someone else has put out there will not help you or your self esteem. As long as you are improving, you are on the right path.
