Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Bishop.
Hi Jessica, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was gifted a pink kodak point and shoot camera by my dad when I was in the 8th grade. I didn’t realize how much I would love it or how much it would change my life. I’ve been taking pictures since really. I used to take a lot of self-portraits (you know, for myspace). haha. I also photographed my dog at the time a lot. It wasn’t really until later in high school that I started to photograph other people and learned that that was my thing. I took my friends senior photos for a bit and once I graduated high school, I started to take photos for other seniors in high school for a while & started charging a little bit for it. Later in college, I had an interest in stepping into the fashion world and wanted to photograph models and get really creative with my work. I fell in love with taking an idea from my head and turning into photos. I experimented with surreal photoshop images, and just explored what I really liked to do. It wasn’t until much later after school that I fell in love with taking photos of couples and wanting to push my career into the direction of wedding photography. I now am so in love with capturing love and documenting wedding days. I still take creative fashion-styled photos as an outlet to express myself. I love how everything has evolved to where I am now.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I’d say it’s overall mostly been smooth, but of course, with every career path there’s always some bumps along the way. I think for the me the hardest part has been building my business into what it has become. It can take a long time to build to where you are comfortable letting go of any other source of income. I’ve only just recently done this believe it or not. I think the biggest thing to learn is how to have a better mindset. I know it seems like that’s what everyone has been saying lately, is to change your mindset but honestly, it’s so important to learn how to do. Once you can grasps that, I think you’ll set yourself up for success. At least the courage to follow what’s important to you.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I photograph couples, weddings, lifestyle images, and creative portrait work. I’m known for creating unique, dreamy, moody, and cinematic style images. I love to play with my work and create new looks on my camera. I am most proud of creating work that continues to inspire me and also inspires others to create. I can’t tell you how good it feels when someone tells me I’m their inspiration… It doesn’t feel every time… like what? me? why? haha. But I also am very grateful for that, and that I am able to provide that for others. I think what sets me apart is the experience I offer and try to create for my clients and whoever is in front of my camera. I want them to be themselves and have fun. For my wedding couples, I want to become for than just a vendor for them. I try to create a tailored experience for my clients, letting them feel confident and like they’ve made a friend along the way as well.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I think being relentless and open-minded is very important. You’ve got to go after what you want. Nobody but you is going to be responsible for your success and you have to take ownership of it.
