Conversations with Jacob Coffman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacob Coffman.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was born and raised in a small town in Oklahoma and knew from an early age that whatever I decided to do when I grew up, I wanted to help people. Maybe it was because I grew up in a family of doctors and teachers, but I always knew I wanted to help people.

I attended the University of Oklahoma after high school, and it was during this time that I fell in love with chiropractic and its potential to help me achieve my goal of helping others. My family discouraged me from pursuing chiropractic. My grandpa was a surgeon who was taught during the Wilks vs AMA era to not trust chiropractors. I respect my father and grandfather’s opinions so not getting their support was tough in the beginning. However, I stuck with it and enrolled to obtain my Doctorate in Chiropractic after graduating from the University of Oklahoma in 2013.

Throughout chiropractic college, I saw a trend. The doctors who spent more time with their patients took more objective measurements at the beginning of care and throughout got better results. I came to find that this was not the industry standard.

After graduating in May of 2017 I was recruited to work at an office in Florida that was supposed to be one of the best when it came to scientific and data-driven chiropractic care. However, I quickly realized that care was limited due to the lack of time allowed with the patient. I was quickly getting burnt out with long hours and discouraged by not being able to give the care I thought my patients deserved. Luckily, things were about to change.

After 6 months in Florida, I had the opportunity to open my own practice, so my wife and I moved to her home state of Ohio and got to work. I learned a lot about how I thought a chiropractic office should operate and the result is Optimize Chiropractic.

In April 2018 I opened Optimize Chiropractic, a Data-Driven Chiropractic office focused on the patient. No long waits in the waiting room, 100% of the time spent with the doctor, enough time for patients to ask questions, and objective data every visit.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Creating Optimize Chiropractic has been awesome. However, it hasn’t been the smoothest road by far. When I moved to Columbus I knew one person, my wife. Once arriving in Columbus I would have 4 months to meet people, market my business, and settle down in a new city. It was a lot, but it was a great experience and I’ve met a ton of amazing people along the way.

Two years after opening in 2018 we had the pandemic and like so many local small businesses we were affected.

Throughout the past few years, I’ve learned a ton and feel like the struggles along the way have helped me become a better doctor, husband, and business owner. Now that we are about to enter 2023 and ending 2022 the road has started to get smoother and I’m excited for 2023 and the future.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am extremely proud of our Data-Driven approach and patient-centric practice. Throughout healthcare so many patients have had bad experiences; not being listened to, feeling like their time has been wasted, not knowing what is really going on with their care, etc. When I opened Optimize Chiropractic my goal was to address many of the issues that surround healthcare and bring the focus back to the patient.

After being opened nearly 5 years I think we have done that. While we can always improve, our patients leave each visit seeing change and feeling improvement, feeling listened to and heard, and knowing that they’re cared for and their best interest is in mind while at our office. I think some of those are pretty rare these days and I’m extremely proud of what we’ve been able to build these last 4+ years for our patients.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I’m a huge nerd. Star Trek, comics, Star Wars, robotics, etc. If I’m not working on the practice or reading health-related research I’m exploring something in the sci-fi/fantasy realm.

I grew up watching Star Wars, building forts in the woods, and dreaming of exploring other planets. I have always been a massive science fiction fan and I don’t think many people that know me through my business know that.
