Conversations with Greg Owens

Today we’d like to introduce you to Greg Owens.

Hi Greg, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Music has always been a part of who I am. I started playing drums at just two years old, and over time that passion grew into producing, songwriting, singing, and leading my own band. Growing up in Columbus, Ohio, I was influenced by funk, soul, R&B, jazz, and hip-hop, and those influences naturally blended into the eclectic sound I create today.

The journey hasn’t always been easy. Like many independent artists, I’ve had to wear a lot of hats, build opportunities from the ground up, and stay committed to my vision even when the road wasn’t clear. Those experiences have helped shape me into the artist and leader I am today.

Now, as a Grammy-nominated multifaceted musician, producer, songwriter, and bandleader, I’m focused on creating timeless music, delivering unforgettable live performances with Harmonic Soul & Mojoflo and continuing to push the culture forward while representing Ohio on a bigger stage.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like many independent artists, I’ve faced financial challenges, self-doubt, and the ups and downs of building a career without a major label behind me. I’ve also experienced setbacks in business partnerships, changes in my band, personal demons and moments where things didn’t go as planned.

At the same time, every challenge has taught me something valuable. Those experiences helped me become a better leader, sharpen my vision, and stay true to who I am as an artist. I’ve learned that success isn’t just about talent—it’s about resilience, consistency, and continuing to move forward even when the path isn’t easy. Those lessons have shaped not only my career but also the music I create today.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a Grammy-nominated multifaceted musician, producer, songwriter, and bandleader. I specialize in blending funk, soul, R&B, jazz, and hip-hop into an eclectic sound that feels both timeless and fresh. Whether I’m performing behind the drums, producing records, writing songs, or leading Harmonic Soul, my goal is always to create music that connects people and delivers an unforgettable live experience.

What I’m most proud of is building my career independently while helping elevate other artists and creating opportunities within my community. I’ve always believed that music is about bringing people together, and that’s something I’ve tried to reflect through every performance, collaboration, and project.

What sets me apart is my versatility. I don’t just play one role, I can perform, produce, write, arrange, and lead, allowing me to bring a complete creative vision to life. I also strive to blend genres in a way that feels authentic, drawing inspiration from Ohio’s rich musical history while creating a sound that’s uniquely my own.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
I’ve been fortunate to have a lot of people pour into me throughout my journey. First and foremost, I have to thank God and my family for always believing in me. My parents instilled the values of hard work, perseverance, and integrity, which have been the foundation of everything I’ve built.

One of the biggest influences in my career has been my mentor, Dr. Milton Ruffin, any former band teachers I had in school and community leaders along the way who helped inspire and shape me into the man I am today.

I’m also grateful for every musician who’s been a part of Harmonic Soul over the years. Their talent, dedication, and belief in the vision have helped shape the band’s identity and elevate every performance. I’ve also been blessed with collaborators, clients, venues, promoters, and supporters who have trusted me with their projects and continued to champion my work.

No one succeeds alone. Every mentor, teammate, collaborator, and supporter has played a role in helping me grow, and I’m incredibly thankful for each of them.
