Today we’d like to introduce you to Gary Thornton III.
Hi Gary, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
When I was 11 years old, I told my parents I wanted to learn how to cut my hair. I was tired of spending my allowance at the barbershop and wanted to save my money for shoes and stuff that I wanted. So, when I turned 12, my parents bought me a set of clippers, and I caught on FAST! The rest was history.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nothing that’s worth having is easy, so yes, it’s been struggles. But it’s been a BEAUTIFUL struggle! I wouldn’t even call it a struggle, it’s more so periods of being uncomfortable. This profession can stretch you in many different ways, so you have to learn how to adapt. I came from barber school right to my own shop, so that was a struggle in a sense, but to me, I just had to learn and adapt every day. Hard times don’t bother me; I use them as fuel.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a barber/shop owner and haircare line owner. I’ve been licensed for 9 years and had my haircare line (debonair haircare) for 8 years. I specialize in men’s high-end grooming, making sure men take pride in their appearance by barbering services. I also service kids as well and we teach them the importance of grooming young.
We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
My first shop I owned. It is the same shop that I used to get my hair cut in as a kid.
