Conversations with Garrett Komyati

Today we’d like to introduce you to Garrett Komyati.

Hi Garrett, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
We started playing music together in high school. It was all instrumental 70’s rock-inspired music with guitar and organ solos. Then I fell in love and the girl asked me to sing for her. We changed our sound and our band name to The Modern Electric and I began singing for the band. Since then, we have released 2 LPs and a few singles. We also started a music non-profit called Cleveland Verses Foundation that gives an outlet for musicians to help those in need with their talents.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The hardest part of my journey with this band was becoming a singer. I was terrified to sing in front of people, but the desire to impress a girl outweighed that terror. I still have so many anxieties when it comes to performing. The fans are such an encouragement though; always singing along to help me feel like I’m not facing my fears alone.

Right now, I am teaching myself how to record and mix music. The learning curve is much steeper than I anticipated. It’s making the recording of our current album take forever. Once I develop my skills as an audio engineer, we hope that The Modern Electric can come out with music much more frequently.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We are a cinematic rock band. It’s a genre we’ve coined to describe our emotionally-driven, orchestral sound. Most of our songs are influenced by our deep devotion to cinema. The beauty in classic films like The 400 Blows, The Graduate, and Taxi Driver have informed our creative process and even inspired us to create short films for our songs. Much more story-based than typical music videos, we write, direct, and edit all of our own film work. We even released a short film a month for a year to coincide with the 12 songs on our album “Original Motion Picture Soundtrack.”

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
With our constant references to classic artists like David Bowie and Lou Reed and classic filmmakers like David Lynch and Stanley Kubrick, our fans might be surprised to find out that we love more current music/film as well. Our upcoming album has modern influences that range from The Weeknd and Harry Styles to the latest Netflix limited series. Call them guilty pleasures, but mainstream artists have plenty to offer (as long as they don’t make up the totality of our diet).
