Conversations with Frank Cage

Today we’d like to introduce you to Frank Cage.

Frank Cage

Hi Frank, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In 2008 upon graduation from college, I moved back to my hometown, Lima, Ohio. At that time, marketing agencies and firm were not present, so I defaulted and work for a local news company and sign shop out of desire to use my visual communication skills. Out of frustration from being limited creatively through those projects, I found myself working quitting, which eventually lead to not only me starting a graphic design firm but also influences several others start-ups because of the success over our 15 years in being in business. Our motivation to start was fueled by lack of creativity in our community and how creativity can push our community/culture forward. Looking at current trends today, it’s safe to say we have been successful at accomplishing one of our goals.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth road… Absolutely not lol. Being the “first ” as a leader, you won’t always have a blueprint for where you’re going, but it’s your responsibility to get you and others there. Leadership always has a mantle of loneliness that associates itself with the calling, which is a struggle within your struggle. I’ve had more failures to count; I think the biggest one has been the misplacement and mismanagement of the vision according to people around me. As a leader, the vision rest inside of you, and it takes a great deal of maturity and discernment to know what to release, when to release, and with whom. A great biblical reference for this would be the story of Joseph; he shared a vision he had with his siblings and found himself in heap of issues from simply speaking at the wrong time with the wrong crowd due to their inability to understand what he was communicating.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
Cage Design Studios is a visual communication and marketing firm. Our Motto is “create freely” We believe that creativity rest inside each and every person, and it’s our job to broaden the range or scope of that impact. We use services such as graphic design, video production, web development to be conduits and advocators of our clients’ stories and highlight the important traits that they don’t see.

I think what set us apart from others is simply being ourselves; we live and lead from a motto of being authentically who you are opposed to what do. We are most proud of the community impact and change we’ve had on our hometown; it’s been stagnant for years, so it feels good when you can see your creative works and influence organically shaping a community around you by things you’ve created.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you.
Luck we don’t believe in; however, faith has been a major contributor to our process. As I stated before, when you start something for the first time, you don’t have a blueprint; it’s scary, it’s lonely, but if you don’t make the first step, you’ll never get to the second, third, forth, or fifth. Taking that first step intentionally removes luck out the equation because at the moment of choice, you have now decided to take the responsibility of the outcome, rather good or bad, and your response to the good or bad outcome will determine if that step is your last or sets you up for the next.
