Today we’d like to introduce you to Elijah Schultz.
Hi Elijah, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
In the spring of 2021, I was preparing to graduate from the University of Louisville and needed to decide my career path going forward. I had had an interest in film production beginning in high school and fostered that interest throughout my college career as well. I took as many film courses as UofL offered, and in my free time, taught myself the technical skills needed through YouTube and other online platforms. A friend and I had also done a bit of commercial work shooting weddings.
Most of my peers at UofL who were interested in film planned to move out to bigger cities, such as NY or Atlanta, and work their way up through the traditional film industry. I felt like this wasn’t the right path for me. I didn’t want to leave the area and the community of family and friends I have here. I also felt that I didn’t want to start at a bottom position where I would have to spend years working my way up. I wanted to be my own boss.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I am greatly blessed that this journey has been, overall, a smooth road. Early on, there were many months when it was a struggle to find enough work. Luckily for me, at the time, I had a part-time job at another local small business to supplement my income. My boss there was extremely supportive and accommodating, giving me flexible hours and scheduling to work around my gigs. Without her support, I would have never been able to get my business up off the ground.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a commercial video producer and photographer. My specialty is making the video production process seamless and non-invasive. With modern camera technology, one can achieve the same or even better results than a traditional production with a large crew and cumbersome equipment. This allows me to be flexible and accommodate unique shooting circumstances. Many of our clients are industrial companies who need someone who can work within strict safety guidelines or on a tight timetable, and this shooting style allows us to meet their needs.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Not particularly. By the time I was starting my business, the impact of Covid and the restrictions were already lessening.
