Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Joanna Consiglio
Hi Dr. Joanna, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been passionate about movement, health, and helping people perform at their best. My journey into chiropractic care started in college when I was studying biology on a pre-med track. At the time, I was deep into fitness and long-distance running, training hard for marathons. Unfortunately, I ended up with a significant running injury, and like most runners, I was desperate for a solution that would get me back to doing what I loved.
That’s when I was introduced to chiropractic care—specifically, a chiropractor who worked with a lot of runners. The treatment I received was unlike anything I had experienced before. It wasn’t just a quick adjustment and out the door; it was a blend of chiropractic, soft tissue work, and rehab that actually addressed the root cause of my pain. It was a turning point for me.
As I continued learning more about healthcare, I realized the traditional medical route didn’t align with how I envisioned helping people. I wanted to provide hands-on, personalized care that focused on movement, function, and long-term health—not just symptom management. That’s when I shifted gears and pursued chiropractic school.
When I started Modern Motion Chiropractic, my goal was simple: to create the kind of practice I wish I had when I was injured. I wanted a space where active individuals—whether runners, CrossFit athletes, weekend warriors, or just people who love to move—could get high-quality, individualized care. No cookie-cutter treatment plans, no high-pressure sales tactics—just real, research-backed care designed to help people move and feel better.
Now, I get to work with athletes and active individuals every day, helping them stay injury-free, recover from setbacks, and perform at their best. It’s been an incredible journey, and I’m grateful to be able to do what I love while making a real impact in people’s lives.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting and growing Modern Motion Chiropractic has been an incredible journey, but it’s definitely come with its challenges.
When I first opened my practice, I was a one-person operation—handling everything from patient care to scheduling, billing, marketing, and social media. It was overwhelming at times, trying to balance being a chiropractor with running the actual business. There’s no handbook on how to do it all, and I had to learn through trial and error what worked and what didn’t.
One of the biggest struggles was breaking away from the traditional chiropractic model. So many clinics focus on high-volume, quick adjustments, or locking patients into long-term care plans that aren’t always necessary. I knew I wanted to do things differently, offering truly individualized care without the sales pressure. But building a practice like that takes time—it requires trust, education, and consistently proving to people that this approach works.
Another challenge was just getting my name out there. I relied on word of mouth, social media, and building relationships in the running and fitness communities. I had to put myself out there, attend events, network, and really show people what I could offer.
And of course, there’s always the financial aspect. Starting a business from scratch isn’t easy, and there were moments where I questioned whether I was doing the right thing. But I stayed committed to my vision, and over time, I built a patient base of people who truly value the care I provide.
Through all the struggles, I wouldn’t change a thing. Every challenge has taught me something valuable—whether it was how to streamline my processes, improve patient communication, or stay resilient in the face of setbacks. At the end of the day, seeing my patients move better, feel better, and reach their goals makes it all worth it.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
At Modern Motion Chiropractic, my focus is on helping active individuals stay injury-free, recover from pain, and perform at their best. I specialize in treating musculoskeletal conditions, pain, tightness, and sports performance, as well as internal conditions using natural solutions like acupuncture and supplements. My patients range from runners and people who simply love to move.
I take a comprehensive, movement-based approach to care. Instead of just focusing on quick adjustments, I incorporate chiropractic adjustments, soft tissue therapy such as muscle scraping, cupping, and myofascial release, as well as dry needling and acupuncture to target pain, inflammation, and internal health concerns. I also emphasize rehab exercises and movement assessments to improve function and prevent injuries. I’m especially passionate about working with runners because I have been there myself. I know what it’s like to deal with injuries and setbacks, so I focus on keeping runners strong, mobile, and performing at their peak.
I’m most proud of the relationships I’ve built with my patients and the trust they place in me. There’s no better feeling than helping someone get back to the activities they love—whether it’s running, lifting, or just living pain-free. I’ve had patients come in thinking they’d never run again, only to see them cross the finish line of a race after working together.
What makes Modern Motion Chiropractic different is the high level of personalized care I provide. I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all treatment plans or requiring people to commit to unnecessary long-term care. Every patient gets an individualized approach based on their unique needs, goals, and lifestyle. I take a full-body approach, treating not just the spine but also extremities, soft tissues, and biomechanics to optimize movement. Unlike many traditional chiropractic offices, I integrate multiple techniques—including rehab and acupuncture—rather than relying solely on adjustments.
Patient education is also a key part of my practice. I make sure my patients understand why they’re in pain and what they can do to stay healthy long-term. Instead of outdated care models that focus on symptom management, I emphasize long-term solutions that help people move better, feel better, and perform at their highest level.
What matters most to you? Why?
Integrity in healthcare is also something that matters deeply to me. I never want to push unnecessary treatments, lock people into long-term plans, or make them feel like they’re dependent on me to function. My job is to help people heal and give them the tools to take care of their own health. Too often, healthcare is driven by profit rather than patient outcomes, and I’ve always wanted Modern Motion to be different—focused on what’s best for the patient, not just what’s best for business.
Ultimately, what matters most is making a lasting impact. Whether it’s helping a runner get to the starting line of their dream race, allowing an athlete to stay competitive, or simply improving someone’s quality of life, I want to be known for genuinely helping people. That’s what makes this work so fulfilling.
