Conversations with Darrell Kenny

Today we’d like to introduce you to Darrell Kenny.

Hi Darrell, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My wife and I were already making our own soft plastics for ourselves. I had been posting about my bait making journey to my social media accounts and had been getting quite a few requests from people to buy my plastics. At the time my wife and I were both working at the same place and being our children’s learning coach’s as they went to Virtual academy. With little notice our boss sold the entire company, leaving us needing new employment all while being in the beginning of the pandemic. My wife found work but still needing someone to be constantly available for the kids school we decided that I should making baits making my full time career. Almost 6 years later and we are constantly improving, growing a good local following and maintaining our Grassroots handmade style. All while using the best materials you can get in the industry.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Oh no definitely bumpy roads past and present. Since we were born from just a love of making soft plastics we did not have the equipment or the cavity counts for production we had a small amount of molds that we like to use ourselves. But more importantly we had no outside money. We were not given much notice before the company we worked for was sold so there was no time to build up capital. Over the past 6 years we have put every dollar we’ve made back into the company to try to buy more cavities and some of the newest molds coming out to stay relevant in the industry and speed up production. But we also maintain a line of wanting to stay small batch and handmade.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We do small batch handmade injection and open pour soft plastic fishing lures. I’d like to think that we are known for making great affordable baits with quality products. But also for our unique Style and and out of the box way that we present our baits on social media. Honestly not sure what sets me apart from other people in my industry. I’d like it to think that it’s our creativity and our original style. One thing that’s great about my industry is there is personal style in almost every company you come across and you can really find a lot of cool stuff out there that fits into your own personal style.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
One thing that people might not know is that.
Because we talk about the web site most of the time. A lot of people might not know that on top the website we are also a custom studio with a huge selection of colors, flakes and shift powders. Also because of our kind of small batch below the radar nature a lot of people might not know that we’ve actually been around for over 6 years.
