Today we’d like to introduce you to Carly Frey.
Hi Carly, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Well, I am Carly Frey (like French Fry). I’m a dog lover, athlete, and entrepreneur. I love hip hop dance and being creative. I’d say I have always been a helper and a doer. As far back as I can remember, I was helping my grandmother’s friends in the retirement home, teachers after the school year ended, and anyone near me (animal or human). I’ve always been the one to take an idea and run with it. I like to make things happen.
Enter a love for sports and a passion for learning and providing a helping space; that’s how I knew I initially wanted to be a school counselor and coach before I even entered undergrad. A few very dynamic teachers and an incredible softball coach led me inadvertently to that specific path. I just knew I wanted to walk alongside other kids who were like me that needed an extra caring adult to get through to see their potential.
My journey has not been without humbling snags— some on the surface level and others that included deep healing in my life and a decision to and enter recovery from alcoholism. Many twists and turns, a few master’s degrees, and a desire to overcome… I have been both Ohio Middle School Counselor of the Year and a lost person trying to find my way. The bumps have paved the way for me to be creative and use my experience to serve others.
Tenacity and trust have led me to the present day— where I am now in my 16th year as a public educator. What still blows me away with gratitude is that I am also the owner of a clinical private practice for mental health therapy as an LPCC, and run a healing business using energy, Spirit, and intuition. My businesses serve a wide variety of people, working individually and leading group workshops using social media, delivering healing as a Reiki Master Teacher, utilizing Sound Healing and Intuitive Mediumship. I still maintain creativity through my very first business of makeup artistry for weddings and photo shoots! Each piece fills a different part of my purpose.
Some pieces have fallen away to make space for the evolving version of me. I no longer coach at high levels. However, I spend much of my spare time working out, playing softball, sand and court volleyball, dancing and adventuring.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Ha! Nope, there have been many obstacles. I firmly believe that my life has intended NOT to be smooth. I was just wired that way. Some of my deepest struggles have provided the biggest amounts of clarity for me as time passes. I’ve had struggles from loss, poverty, grief, trauma, and the facing of my alcoholism. Without every bump, specifically entering recovery, I don’t believe that anything would be as it is today. There have been many highs and accomplishments too. There is true gratitude for all that was, is and will be.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m not sure how to construct this best, as it’s so very eclectic! My first love has always been working as a middle school counselor. There is nothing like it, as an advocate for all kids! And for the last three years, my own private practice (The Journey Within) has taken shape for clinical therapy, where I am able to help individuals, couples and families process and heal traumas through EMDR, manage anxiety/depression, and work through conflict.
These pieces have allowed me to travel a very winding journey where I have begun to work as a Reiki Master Teacher and Sound Healer. It has continued to expand through intuitive mediumship, life coaching, card readings, and light work with humans and animals (All Things Carly). Both of these business ventures are part of a larger Healing Space being created both on social media outlets and physically Kent, Ohio called The Soul Rising Collective, alongside my talented friend and mentor, Julie Genovese.
I’d say my specialty is doing my best to help others as creatively as possible. It has changed shape over the years, but impacting others is what makes me feel best. And, if I had to look at what I’m known for, I would hope that it is my giving heart. Whether that be to a student who needs a shoulder, a client who needs space created to cope with trauma, or using my skills in energetic healing… I hope I have inspired others to push forward and to overcome.
I am most proud of the fact that I’ve never given up. So many things have happened throughout my life that have given both the chance to celebrate and to climb. I believe that I have continued to press on, despite any odds against me and significant adversity.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Helping others to begin to heal themselves matters most to me. Believing in students who I can advocate for makes me happy. Creating a space of trust and understanding for clients to thrive and gain their own answers lights my soul. Along with that it would have to be my long term sobriety, playing sports, and the great love I have for my dogs, which includes 5 Great Danes, a golden doodle, and a pitbull.
I want others to feel seen and heard. I want others to find their place in the world and to discover their passions, regardless of what the world says. I love love. And, the best is yet to come.
