Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Montgomery

Hi Ashley, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Candle-making was supposed to be a one and done fun activity with friends summer 2019. However, I couldn’t stop learning, researching, and “pouring” into the craft.

My business began October 2019 while at a women’s retreat. I went in thinking that I wanted to be an influencer, came out knowing that I wanted to turn my passion into something that could influence joy, self care, and intentionality.

Fast forward four plus years…Candle-making still brings me joy and I love that I can pass the joy on to customers through cultivating quality scented candles and candle-making experiences.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Social media makes candle-making seem super easy and seamless. However, everything must be tested (there’s truly a science to coming up with a great candle).

I started my business before the pandemic hit and launched online during the pandemic.

Running a business in itself can be tough. But navigating product shortages and increased costs can make or break any business. There were times when certain wicks, wax, and even vessels were out of stock indefinitely. So there had to be a plan a, b, and c…all ingredients are not created equal. So yes, lots of money spent to find ideal combinations/formulas (and stock up once you found another formula that worked!).

The pandemic truly showed business owners, especially makers what they were made of.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Prototype Scents® Candle Co. is the home of scented candles and wax melts in which are Soy based, all natural, phthalate-free, and handcrafted/poured by me.

I literally can make candles any time of day– it brings me joy and I love that I can pass the joy on to customers. I take pride in the quality of my product and the thought/TLC that goes into delivering amazing scented candles.

I believe what sets me apart is that I am operating from an intentional and passionate place.

I don’t look left or right….I don’t do what’s trendy or make product decisions based on what has made others successful.

All of my creations have come from within.

Customers can tell the difference and I truly believe that is what has made Prototype Scents® successful.

What’s next?
Candle-making and producing an amazing product will continue to be a priority.

Most recently, I have started doing private and public candle-making workshops. It has been really special to interact with other enthusiasts as well as cultivate memorable experiences.

I look forward to wholesale and distribution opportunities that may come my way. Additionally, I am always excited and welcome opportunities to join pop-up events and vend at markets.
