Conversations with Aqua Harrington

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aqua Harrington.

Hi Aqua , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
While studying Plant Biology at Ohio University around 2015 I was searching for a way to manage my anxiety. I filled my time doing research, going to class and simply going back to my space to rest. Looking for an outlet outside of academia, I first turned to painting. As a child, I spent a lot of time with my grandmothers who were always crafting something; from sewing, to knitting, baking and even gardening. I was always given the chance to express myself alongside them. I channeled that same creative mindset for my painting hobby in college. The more I painted as way to learn how to exhale, the more people had inquired about my paintings. Eventually, someone mentioned selling the pieces and from there I started vending at in person events. By allowing my creativity to flow I have shifted from painter to all around creative and visual artist. My artistry is a form of art therapy and resistance to a fast paced world, a way to release feeling while also allowing space for the viewer to gain emotional clarity and relief as well.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been challenges along the way mostly with rushing the process of creation or even being denied from vending events, galleries and a grant denial or two. But for the most part every obstacle has been only a slight setback and I know there will be more but I hold onto the reminder that the only constant is change and I navigate the best I can with the intention of just simply doing my best.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My artistry is all about cosmic energy and emotional regulation. I specialize in having nature and sapphic motifs, gold leaf accents and lots crystal jewelry to promote clarity. My handmade jewelry uses crystals to create necklaces, bracelets and ornate tops and outfits. What sets me apart from the others is that my main inspiration comes from my life as a black lesbian, a connection to Mother Earth, and even how some of my favorite writers such as Toni Morrison, Audre Lorde and Zora Neale Hurston painted pictures so vividly with words I feel inspired to create a glimpse into these stories through visual art.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Keep being creative for the sake of release, even if it’s just a little everyday. “First forget inspiration. Habit is more dependable. Habit will sustain you whether you’re inspired or not. Habit will help you finish and polish your stories. Inspiration won’t. Habit is persistence in practice.” – Octavia Butler
