Conversations with Annie Gabriel

Today we’d like to introduce you to Annie Gabriel.

Hi Annie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My crochet journey began with a chance encounter during my childhood.

I must have been elementary school-aged when I first encountered the mesmerizing art of crochet. One sunny afternoon, while playing in the park, I noticed an older woman sitting on a bench with a hook and yarn in her hands. I watched from a distance, fascinated by the rhythmic movement of her fingers as she transformed a simple strand of yarn into something beautiful.

Noticing my curiosity, she smiled warmly and invited me over. With incredible patience, she handed me a crochet hook and some yarn and taught me how to make a single crochet stitch. I was instantly captivated. Before we parted ways, she gifted me a set of starter hooks and a skein of yarn. I remember holding them tightly, feeling like I had been given something magical. Remarkably, I still have those hooks today, and they remain one of my most treasured possessions.

That simple act of kindness sparked a lifelong passion. Over the years, crochet became my creative outlet, a source of comfort, and a way to express myself. I spent countless hours learning new techniques, experimenting with different projects, and creating gifts for family and friends.

More than a decade ago, my sisters and I combined our talents to launch a creative business called DAY Gabriel Designs. The name DAY was created from our first names: Denisse, Annie, and Yudith. Together, we sold a wide variety of handmade items including crochet dolls, scarves, hats, fingerless gloves, blankets, coasters, cozies, stationery, notebooks, notepads, and candy bouquets.

By the end of 2020, we began learning more about business strategy and the importance of finding a niche. We realized that each of us had different passions and strengths, so we made the decision to split the business into separate ventures. On January 18, 2021, DAY Gabriel Crochet was born, allowing my younger sister and I to focus entirely on crochet creations and, in particular, our love for amigurumi. Around the same time, my older sister launched Paint Party en Español, where she creates paint kits and hosts paint parties in both English and Spanish.

Since then, DAY Gabriel Crochet has continued to grow. What began as a childhood hobby and later became a family business has evolved into a brand focused on creating handmade crochet pieces that bring joy to others. Today, I specialize in custom “Mini Me” dolls, plushies, flowers, accessories, and keepsake pieces. I have had the opportunity to participate in local markets, festivals, and community events throughout Central Ohio, connecting with customers who appreciate handmade craftsmanship and the stories behind each creation.

One of my favorite aspects of this work is creating custom pieces that celebrate people and special memories. Whether it’s a personalized doll, a meaningful gift, or a keepsake that honors a loved one, I love knowing that something made with my hands can become part of someone else’s story.

Looking back, it’s amazing to think that a brief conversation in a park could shape so much of my future. The kindness of a stranger introduced me to a craft that would become a lifelong passion, a family business, and ultimately DAY Gabriel Crochet. Through my work and my tagline, “Stitching joy into every DAY,” I hope to pass that same joy and kindness on to others, one stitch at a time.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like most small business owners, I would not describe the journey as a smooth road, but every challenge taught us something valuable.

One of our biggest early struggles was trying to be everything to everyone. When my sisters and I operated as DAY Gabriel Designs, we offered a wide variety of products, from crochet items and stationery to candy bouquets and other handmade goods. While we enjoyed creating all of those things, it became difficult to clearly communicate what made us unique. We found ourselves spread too thin and lacking a clear identity.

That challenge ultimately led to one of the best decisions we ever made. Through business seminars, workshops, summits, and coaching programs, we learned the importance of finding a niche and focusing on our strengths. In 2021, we restructured the business and launched DAY Gabriel Crochet, allowing us to focus on crochet creations and, more specifically, amigurumi. Having that focus helped us better serve our customers and build a stronger brand.

Another challenge has been learning where our audience is. We have participated in countless markets, festivals, and pop-up events over the years. Not every event was a success, and some were definitely better than others. Each experience taught us something about our ideal customer, product mix, pricing, presentation, and the types of events that align best with our business. There was a lot of trial and error, but those lessons have been invaluable.

Most recently, we faced the unexpected closure of our storefront location at Painted Tree. Like many small business owners, we had invested time, energy, and resources into building that presence. While it was disappointing, it also reinforced an important lesson: businesses must remain flexible and adaptable. Rather than viewing it as a setback, we chose to focus our energy on the opportunities ahead, including local markets, community events, partnerships, and continuing to grow our online presence.

Looking back, every obstacle has pushed us to become better business owners. The challenges have taught us resilience, encouraged us to keep learning, and helped shape DAY Gabriel Crochet into what it is today.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
At DAY Gabriel Crochet, I specialize in creating handmade crochet amigurumi, custom dolls, plushies, flowers, accessories, and keepsake pieces. While I create many different crochet creations, I am best known for my custom “Mini Me” dolls, which are designed to capture the unique characteristics, personality, and stories of the people they represent.

What makes my work so meaningful is that these dolls are often about much more than a handmade gift. They become keepsakes that celebrate people, preserve memories, and honor important moments in someone’s life.

Over the years, I have had the honor of creating Mini Me dolls for a variety of meaningful occasions. I created dolls of two women from Uganda who were leaders in their community, and those dolls were auctioned to help raise funds for their cause. I have also created memorial dolls for loved ones who have passed away, including a father who was recreated in four different outfits so each of his four children could have their own special keepsake of him.

I have created dolls to celebrate milestones and relationships as well, including a nurse who commissioned a Mini Me doll of the doctor she admired, and more recently, a custom doll of a sheriff’s granddaughter. Each project tells a different story, and I feel incredibly grateful when someone trusts me to help capture a person who means so much to them.

What I am most proud of is the emotional connection behind each creation. Crochet is often viewed as a craft, but I see it as a way to preserve memories and create tangible reminders of the people and moments that matter most. Knowing that something made with my hands can bring comfort, happiness, or a sense of connection is the greatest reward.

I believe what sets DAY Gabriel Crochet apart is the personalization and craftsmanship that goes into every piece. Each creation is handmade with careful attention to detail, from selecting colors and materials to capturing the small features that make each person unique. I don’t simply create a doll that resembles someone; I strive to create a piece that reflects who they are.

I am also committed to continuing to learn and grow as both an artist and a business owner. Through workshops, business classes, coaching, and years of hands-on experience, I continue to refine my craft and find new ways to serve my customers.

At the heart of DAY Gabriel Crochet is my mission to create pieces that bring joy, celebrate life’s special moments, and help people feel connected. That’s what “Stitching joy into every DAY” means to me—creating something handmade that carries a little piece of someone’s story.

Any big plans?
Looking ahead, I am excited to continue growing DAY Gabriel Crochet while finding new ways to connect with my community. One of my biggest goals for the future is to expand into teaching crochet classes and workshops.

Throughout my journey, I have experienced firsthand how meaningful it can be when someone takes the time to share a skill with you. My own crochet journey began because a kind stranger in a park patiently taught me my first stitch, and I would love the opportunity to create that same sense of connection for others.

I have noticed a growing interest in beginner-friendly, in-person crochet classes in my area, and I am currently developing coursework that will make learning crochet approachable, creative, and enjoyable. Whether someone is picking up a hook for the first time or looking to improve their skills, my goal is to create a welcoming environment where people can learn, build confidence, and experience the joy of making something with their own hands.

Of course, I will continue creating my handmade crochet pieces, including custom Mini Me dolls, plushies, and other keepsakes, while exploring new designs and opportunities to collaborate with the local community.

The future of DAY Gabriel Crochet is about more than growing a business—it is about continuing to stitch joy into every DAY by creating, teaching, and sharing the craft that has brought so much meaning to my own life.
