Conversations with Allison Leonard

Today we’d like to introduce you to Allison Leonard.

Hi Allison, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
My photography career was a happy little accident (with a big dose of a lot of hard work). I went to school for graphic design and graduated with a Visual Communications and Fine Arts degree.  I worked in that field for around 10 years before picking up a camera. After having my family photos taken in 2007, I was gifted a nice camera and set out to try photography as a hobby.

Knowing my way around Photoshop was so helpful, but I became a little obsessed with learning how to use a camera to take better photos. After clicking that little shutter button a few thousand times, my work started improving to the point where I started photographing friends. I kept practicing and researching online and eventually, after photographing friends and family for a couple of years someone, asked me to photograph their wedding!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It’s not always been smooth, but it has been successful. Hard work, long hours, and determination eventually allowed me to quit my full-time job and become self-employed. Working what was likely two full-time jobs for a few years while I grew my client base wasn’t easy, but in the end worth it!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a wedding and portrait photographer. My couples often come back to me when they start growing their families.  This is my favorite thing about my business model. Having clients come back with their little ones is just the absolute best. I don’t want to just capture my client’s wedding day, I want to capture all those other happy moments in their lives. My clients feel like family to me because of this!

What does success mean to you?
Success = happiness. I’m happy not being in the corporate world, I love my job and what I do. I love capturing other people’s happy moments. I’m happy, that’s success!
