Community Highlights: Meet William McKnight of Carbon Cuts window tinting

Today we’d like to introduce you to William McKnight.

William McKnight

Hi William, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
So, it pretty much all started about 5 years ago in high school at my first high school job. I worked at a car wash that also did interior and exterior detailing. But the prices they charged were super cheap, like $10 for a whole interior clean. So, I worked there through my senior year and fortunately, my brother who is 2 years older than me worked there as well until he graduated. He realized that he can charge way more for these interior and exterior cleanings so he started his own mobile detailing business. Next thing you know, I need a job, so I started working for him to make a little bit of money; soon enough, I wanted to make even more money, so I essentially took over his business, and he stopped working for it, and I was running it on my own for about a year out of high school. After that year was up, I was kind of getting sick of mobile detailing in. Luckily, we came upon a shop for rent at a good price on Tyler Boulevard, so I tools the opportunity to teach myself how to do window tinting. It only took me about four months until I was comfortable to start taking customers, and after that it was off to the races. Then I began posting tips and helpful videos for people at home on TikTok. Now I’m not anywhere near where I need to be and it is very early in my journey to reach my goal, but I’m looking forward to this next year to make the most out of it.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not a smooth road. From starting with very little money and little experience it was very difficult. I really had to present myself in a much more professional manner to ensure quality.

I ran into a lot of learning curve issues. like for example I was able to do majority of basic cars at the 4-month mark but there was a few tricky windows that I had issues with due to lack of experience.

We’ve been impressed with Carbon Cuts window tinting, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
So here at Carbon Cuts, we provide high-quality window tinting and detailing service to automotive vehicles. We provide heat, protective, film, and basic style film for the customers’ likeness. I think I get set apart by my age, professionalism, and quality of work for how little experience I have. I also think people going to notice my tick-tock videos, helping out, and getting a following on social media that definitely sets me apart from the competition. And honestly, I’m just most proud of this past year. I’m being able to start up with almost nothing and bring it to the stage that my business is at today is a true blessing.

I want the readers to know that there’s a lot of ways to make money in this world, and a business is a great way, especially service business. You just have to put in the work

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up.
Me and my brothers used to trap bees under nets, shake them around then let them go and run away trying not to get stung
