Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyisha Turner.
Hi Tyisha, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Coming from a single parent home I I always needed my hair done for school in the morning because my mother worked first shift so I started off doing simple styles on myself like ponytails, two French braids, and flat ironing my hair. Also, as a kid I grew up on a block called macomber. It was about 10 of us family and friends that we called ourselves the block kids/ gorillas. Being the only kid who couldn’t get nothing from the corner store macomber market I started to practice and do my friends and family hair to hustle up money to buy candy just like everybody else. Which made fall in love with the passion of doing hair and wanting to become a beautician because not only is it “walking art” as my Husband would say it’s therapeutic for me to take my mind off the pain I go through on a daily basis. My mother Benita Dawson passed away 5 months after I graduated from Start high school on November 15, 2012 and that day become the worst nightmare of my life . Not only did I lose my mother, but my bestfriend, my backbone, my heart , my life when I found her dead that morning I died with her but I never got a chance to grieve because I had to step up and become not only a big sister to my baby brother Tyreece he was 6 at the time and I was 17 I had to be mom at the same time so I didn’t have time to be weak or cry and give up on life I had to do what I had to do to be there for him and give him a great future! So with trials and tribulations and storms in between I decided to go to cosmetology school because I promised myself that I would open 10 salons in 10 different states as well as open a cosmetology school. I continued to stand in business and eventually opened my first salon 5 star rating on google and BOOKSY and many other sites. In honor of my mom name “Benita” they used to call her “Bonita” which means beautiful is Spanish I decided to get my LLC and name my business BONITA LOCCS AND BRAIDS and I blew up from there but everybody has they downfalls and I want to be the one to encourage that there is always up and downs in being an entrepreneur, small business owner, self employed, CEO whatever u want to call it and it get lonely at the top family and friends will disappear but don’t let that stop your future or downgrade or give up on your business or happiness because I always bounce back and be 100 times greater and stronger. So keep going I am currently working on opening a second salon in Michigan.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No! There will never ever be a smooth road because life be lifeing and when I say that I mean you will never know what will happen within a blink of eye from paying business bills to life bills, loosing your car, going through eviction, I lost my mom and my dad forever and lost my little brother for a little bit of time but we are back together! Also, I am a domestic violence survivor sad to say I dealt with being in a abusive relationship and lost everything at one point of time so yes I suffer from major depression and severe PTSD but that doesn’t mean give up on life or crate suicide because believe or not being a beautician you are a therapist as well and help others in many ways.
