Hi Troy, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Both my wife and I have dry skin and a medical condition that requires that I use special soap and creams to keep my skin looking and feeling normal on my hands and arms. I did a lot of research on over-the-counter products that could help without the use of prescription soap and cream. Eventually, I came across some information about using an all-natural goat’s milk soap that other people had success with. I bought some at a farmers’ market and was amazed at the difference that it made, but I thought I could improve on it. From then on, I decided I would learn how to make my own, so I could control what went into it, and to be more cost-effective.
I eventually came up with a recipe that I thought was leaps and bounds better than any other soap or body wash I’d ever used. Once I perfected this and let a few friends and family members try it out, I was convinced that I needed to offer my soap for sale to the public. It was just too good to keep under wraps any longer, so I setup a soap “lab” and a website to start selling online. We also attend local pop-up markets as well as permanent spaces in a few local botiques.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, of course not! The market is very saturated, and you have to stand out! Online sales have been slow to catch on, and advertising is expensive. Everyone who purchases has rave reviews of our products though. It is just very hard to convince the non-believers that their $10 plastic bottle of body wash is terrible for the environment and their skin. Also, a huge waste of money considering a bar of our soap will last just as long, if not longer with the same amount of use!
