Today we’d like to introduce you to Todd Hudson
Hi Todd, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
When I was around 15 or so, I decided I wanted to open a restaurant that focused on buying food straight from farms. And I also wanted to marry my 7th grade sweet heart Jenna. 9 years later we bought an old house and converted it into a small cafe while we lived upstairs. We got married shortly there after. Originally, she did all the serving and I did all the cooking, but she also taught art so when school started it was down to just me doing both. I would go to the local farmers markets everyday, come home and write the next days menu and Jenna would transcribe it onto a big chalkboard in the dining room. I’d prep everything, wait for the customers to come in, take their order, go back and cook it and bring it out. It wasn’t the best business idea but people fell in love with what we were doing and how passionate I was about food. Next thing I knew, we were packed all the time and was living my dream.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Over 17 years in this business you see almost everything there is to see. We survived an economic melt down in 2008, got married, had 2 awesome kids, lost some amazing humans, met some amazing humans, battled through Covid and just tried to get better and adapt the whole ride. It’s been stressful at times but has been so much fun I won’t ever be able to even express the joy it has brought myself and a lot of people.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about The Wildflower Cafe?
We are a small, chef owned cafe whose menu is built entirely around ingredients sourced from our own farm and a team of hyper local farms. Our menu changes monthly to reflect ingredients at their peak seasonality amd availability.
We opened the cafe to recreate the feeling we felt sitting around my grandmothers breakfast table, where no one knew a stranger, everyone was welcome and the food facilitated soul nourishment. The Wildflower has become a community gathering spot where people come as strangers and leave as family. That’s exactly what we wanted it to be.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Passion, love, integrity and a mantra that we just try to get better every week.
