Community Highlights: Meet Tellis Kennedy of Tellis Kennedy Realtor/Miles Property Group

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tellis Kennedy

Hi Tellis, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Real estate investing has been a passion of mine from a young age. My journey officially began in 2021 when I started working as a property manager, collaborating with landlords and investors. This hands-on experience allowed me to absorb valuable insights early in my career. Soon after, I took the plunge into real estate investing myself, purchasing apartments to rent out.

Later in 2021, I decided to further my expertise by obtaining my real estate license with the goal of becoming a more knowledgeable and effective investor. As my journey continued, I found myself enjoying the process of helping others buy homes and began selling real estate in addition to managing my own rental properties.

In 2022, I returned to school to pursue a master’s degree, focusing on finance to strengthen the financial side of my business, Miles Property Group LLC. This educational experience has been invaluable in managing the books and operations of my growing real estate portfolio.

Today, I continue to manage my rental apartments and assist clients in buying homes. This year has marked a significant shift in my career, as I’ve added a new investment strategy—fix-and-flips—to my portfolio. I’ve recently acquired my first property for this purpose and am currently in the process of renovating it.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road to success in real estate has certainly not been easy. Competing against seasoned professionals with years of experience has been a challenge, and on top of that, balancing my real estate aspirations with my full-time job at Procter & Gamble was demanding. I had to be incredibly selective with my time and commitment to both.

One of the biggest hurdles I faced early on was failing my real estate license exam. It was a setback, but it pushed me to study harder and retake the exam. Along the way, I’ve encountered numerous obstacles in managing my rental properties—everything from walls caving in and needing full renovations to a flood that nearly destroyed my basement. These experiences have been tough but also invaluable learning opportunities.

I believe many people wait for the “perfect” moment to start, but my approach has always been different. I’ve learned to dive in and figure things out as I go because, in this industry, failure is inevitable. It’s not about waiting for the right circumstances, but about taking action and adapting along the way.

As you know, we’re big fans of Tellis Kennedy Realtor/Miles Property Group. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
While most people know me as a realtor, helping families and individuals find their dream homes, at my core, I’m an investor. Real estate investing is where my true passion lies, and I just happen to also love serving my community. My primary focus is building and expanding my rental portfolio, which I’m committed to growing over time.

Outside of real estate, I have a strong interest in stocks and crypto. As a finance major, I’m definitely a numbers guy, and I enjoy exploring various investment opportunities. One of my proudest accomplishments to date is my first rental property, which turned out to be an incredible deal and really gave me the foundation to build my investment strategy.

What I want people to know about my brand is that I am genuinely rooting for everyone to succeed. While I may keep a smile on my face, behind the scenes, I work tirelessly to achieve my goals. I also have a strong passion for giving back and actively participate in community events, collaborating with volunteer leaders to make a positive impact.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I am deeply passionate about financial literacy and wealth-building, which is why I immerse myself in top-tier educational content. Earn Your Leisure’s Market Mondays and Blackout are my go-to podcasts—I watch every episode because they provide invaluable insights into investing, business, and economic trends. I also find BiggerPockets incredibly beneficial for all things real estate, offering expert strategies and real-world experiences that align with my journey. Additionally, I enjoy Money and Wealth by John Hope Bryant, which delivers powerful financial principles and economic empowerment strategies.

When it comes to books, I’m drawn to transformative reads like The 5 AM Club, Think and Grow Rich, and Rich Dad Poor Dad. These books have shaped my mindset, instilling discipline, an abundance mentality, and the importance of leveraging assets to build long-term wealth.
