Community Highlights: Meet Tara Mullins-Cosme and Joel Cosme of Community Grounds: Coffee & Meeting House

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tara Mullins-Cosme and Joel Cosme. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Tara, originally from rural Ohio, and Joel, originally from New York City, met while living in the city of Bundang in South Korea. We returned to the States together and planted roots in Columbus’ South Side neighborhood, Ganthers Place. We have three children, three small businesses, a neighborhood pocket park, and a whole lotta love for our little corner of the world.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Our program, Suspended South Side allows anyone to claim items at Community Grounds that have been paid ahead by someone else. We had no idea how much or how fast this program would grow, as we entered a pandemic less than a year after opening our storefront. Times have been very hard for everyone, and more people are requesting suspensions than ever before. We never turn someone away, and community support helps keep this movement sustainable. We’re so thankful for the generosity of those who contribute!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Community Grounds: Coffee & Meeting House is a coffee shop and mercantile serving up lots of love on Columbus’ South Side. We are known for all things house-made- our South Side Chai, unique syrups, calzones, and oat-based soft serve! We’re an ever-evolving community space for sharing love and ideas over locally sourced coffee, eats, products, and merch. Our mercantile is proud to support woman Owned, Black-owned, Veteran owned, Immigrant owned, LGBTQ+-owned businesses, disability-owned, youth-owned small businesses and start-ups, as well as small businesses co-owned by couples and merch from local musicians we love. We go extremely hard for our neighbors near and far and anyone who needs a little community and kindness in their life.
