Community Highlights: Meet Spencer Hawk of Crooked River Studios

Today we’d like to introduce you to Spencer Hawk.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Music has been a passion of mine for two decades. I’ve always played, written, and performed, but never got into producing music until the last few years. I started off producing and recording my own music, picking up skills along the way, learning everything I could from videos and online courses. This sparked the idea of performing this service for others, and when the pandemic started, I decided it was time to bear down and hone this craft.

The uncertainty and instability that came with the lockdowns (losing my job at the time and gaining much more free time in the process) solidified my desire to be in business for myself. I had been in the field of telecommunications sales for about 12 years and became extremely burnt out by the industry. Working with and meeting people were passions of mine but the work itself was soul-sucking. I had to make a change if I was ever going to feel fulfilled. There will always be music to be made and people to make it, and if I can make it my life’s work to help these artists put their work out into the world, I’ll always feel good about what I’m doing.

I started Crooked River Studios officially in April of this year and have since worked with a few Ohio artists. I look forward to being able to do this full-time and realizing my dream of making a musical living.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’d say the only struggle so far has been getting exposure and new clients… But it’s only been a couple months, so I’ll get back to you on that!

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Crooked River Studios LLC?
Crooked River Studios aims to make pro-quality records on the artists’ terms. We offer mobile recording services, bringing the studio to the artists’ own space instead of them having to pack up everything and lug it into a studio. We promise to breathe life into each recording and give them the care and attention they deserve.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
The music industry as we know it is moving towards home recording and phasing out record companies. Crooked River Studios will cater to individual artists who want to cut out the middle man. They can already release and promote their own music without a label, and now the studio can come to them.
