Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsay Florkey.
Hi Lindsay, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
After attending a vocational high school and working in various healthcare fields, I decided that optometry was the direction that I wanted to go. I always enjoyed going to the optometrist as a patient, they always had really cool toys! I spent a good deal of time as I was going through undergrad at Wright State University in different optometry offices and learning more about the profession. I was fortunate enough to go to The Ohio State University College of Optometry. It was a fantastic experience! When I graduated, I was working three part-time jobs to make a full-time career. I was in two private practices and the Dayton VA. The one private practice was the practice that I now own. I really enjoyed working there because the patients were great. Xenia is a small-town at its heart and that allowed me to build a family-like atmosphere. After serving patients for 21 years in this practice, I truly feel connected to the patients and the greater community. I get to see the children of patients that I saw as children. It is extremely rewarding, even if it makes me feel old.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Becoming a business owner after only 3 years in practice was not part of my grand plan. This was a huge transition, and I struggled with wearing all of the hats necessary to run a 3 location practice. I was fortunate to work with some consulting firms that helped me put in the structure that my practice was lacking. In September 2010, our main location had a fire and we lost almost everything. It was also difficult because the owner of the building that I was renting did not have insurance. We were able to spread the patients across our other two offices and continue practicing, but it was mentally difficult to keep plugging along. I made the decision to purchase the land that the burned building was on and build a new building. The building was completed and we moved in at the end of November 2011. This process required me to take on a great deal of debt. This has been a challenge until about 5 years ago. We have been able to eliminate a great deal of debt and become an extremely successful practice. When COVID hit and we had to shut down practice, it seemed almost easy given everything we had already overcome. I definitely was better prepared to use my head and not my heart and make smarter business decisions that allowed us to get through the pandemic without much issue.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We are a full service optometric practice providing care to patients of all ages. We strive to provide the most thorough care for patients that are simply looking to improve their vision or manage health issues of the eyes. We aim to provide patients with the best in spectacles and/or contact lenses to achieve the best vision. We are “More Than Great Vision” because we consider the entire patient not just their eyeballs when we are providing care. Our holistic and thorough approach while maintaining a family-like atmosphere is what sets us apart.
What makes you happy?
Time well spent makes me happy. There are many things that I do that make me happy but they all involve spending my time wisely. Being with my family, reading a good book, providing care to my patients, volunteering, hiking in the park, having a glass of wine. All of these things allow me to be in the moment and enjoy my time. We never know how much time we are going to have, so savoring each moment makes me happy.
