Hi Laura , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My design career began by constructing paper and scotch tape models in my bedroom before I could read. The exploration of 3D space lead architectural and interior design projects for the past 24 years. It’s a journey that’s seen dreams turn into reality, one project at a time.
I embarked on my professional path in the world of architecture focusing on historic preservation projects. This early work deepened my appreciation for the past, grounding my designs in the stories and craftsmanship of earlier eras. One of my most rewarding experiences was converting pre-civil war barns into homes. The contrast of old timber frames with modern materials created spaces that were not only breathtaking but also soul-stirring.
As my career progressed, I transitioned to a firm specializing in hotel architecture. However, the 2010 housing crash shifted the landscape of the industry, prompting me to pivot to an interior design firm. There, I focused on multifamily housing projects across the country, honing my skills and broadening my design perspective.
In 2016, I embraced the entrepreneurial spirit and founded co-Create Brilliance, Inc. This step marked the beginning of some of the most exciting chapters of my career. One of my dream projects involved converting a 1905 brick mansion in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, into 14 very special apartments. This historic gem, adorned with 12 fireplaces and intricate architectural details, was reborn as vibrant living spaces.
Another significant milestone was serving as the Design Director for 14 custom townhomes. Each townhome was designed to resonate with its unique homeowner, ensuring every space felt personalized and magnificent.
Another exciting project was the full renovation of an 8-story hotel in downtown Canton, Ohio, for the Football Hall of Fame’s 100-year celebration. I transformed the once dark and tired lobby into a fresh and inviting space. The 165 guest rooms received a complete refresh, while the ballroom, now an award-winning venue, has become a favored spot for brides. Additionally, the new restaurant warmly welcomes guests and visitors alike, creating an atmosphere of harmony and great energy.
Throughout my career, I have remained steadfast in my goal: to enliven every space I work on with abundance, harmony, and great energy. This philosophy isn’t just a professional endeavor; it’s a fulfillment of the dreams of the little girl who once crafted imaginary buildings in her bedroom.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Of course not. The path of a designer is rarely a straight one. Take the Football Hall of Fame Hotel project, for instance—this was certainly no exception. Picture a fast track akin to a bullet train, with a pressing deadline for a massive 100-year celebration. Both the design and construction teams were relentless, pushing through 60 to 80-hour weeks for nearly ten months straight. It was a race against time, and the pressure was immense.
I’ve always likened design projects to big puzzles, each with its own unique set of issues and problems to solve. While the road is hardly ever smooth, that’s precisely what I love about it. The twists and turns compel you to think differently, to innovate, and ultimately to create better solutions. Every challenge is an opportunity to push the boundaries of design, ensuring that each project stands out not just in aesthetics but in functionality and impact.
