Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Wright.
Jessica, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I spent over 13 years in non-profit holding positions such as Director of Employer Engagement and Senior VP of Workforce Development, coupled with a bachelor’s degree in human resources. I fell in love with community the good, the bad, and the ugly. Everything from poverty to reinvesting in neighborhoods. I had wonderful friends who were fellow entrepreneurs who not only encouraged me to start my own business but also showed me the tremendous need for my business. The more I explored the need and realized that small businesses (including non-profits), entrepreneurs, and start-ups often cannot afford an HR manager or HR service function often for at least 5 to 10 years within opening their business. I knew I had the knowledge and skills to change this and to make a difference.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely a ton of work. Most people do not realize that there is little to NO grant funding opportunities for service-based businesses. When you don’t offer tangible products and the only way to scale quickly is to hire additional staff there are definitely no grant opportunities for that. Even though all of my clients are women-owned or minority-owned businesses and I have been able to assist with everything from hiring to terminations with proven results sponsorships are also hard to come by being such a new business.
