Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Kirschner
Hi Jessica, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Embarking on my first retail job at fifteen, I never foresaw it as the catalyst for an 18-year career across major East Coast cities like Boston, New York, and Washington, D.C. This journey profoundly deepened my understanding of interpersonal relationships and the intricacies of the human experience. My years in retail, meeting people and hearing their stories, struggles, and accomplishments, fueled my passion for serving others and ultimately led me to create Mindful Modern Living.
Reflecting on my extensive customer service career reveals a transformation from materialistic transactions to a focus on holistic well-being—mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. My dedication to enhancing overall well-being through the mind-body-spirit connection stems from this rich tapestry of experiences, exposing me to diverse stories that underscore the multidimensional nature of human health and wellness.
During my time on the East Coast, I began struggling with dysthymia, a milder but long-lasting form of depression. I dealt with severe fatigue, gastrointestinal issues, and insomnia. After years of consulting various doctors and psychologists, I was eventually told that my chronic stress and anxiety were compounding, and my mental and emotional struggles were manifesting physically. In 2017, I enrolled in a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) 8-week course through Cambridge Health Alliance in Massachusetts. This experience planted the seed for my journey into holistic health and wellness practices. I was introduced to meditation, breathwork, yoga, and the profound practice of body scans. Juan, my instructor, would remind us during meditation, “Your mind will think, that’s what they do. But when you notice it drift, just gently bring it back to your body. Notice how your thoughts enter, and then notice how they exit. You can always come back to your breath.”
I love my mind for what it allows me to accomplish, but some days the internal dialogue and noise are unbearable. Sometimes I control it, and other times it controls me. Using mindfulness techniques like following my breath in and out allows me the space to notice, explore, and be gentle with that noise. In 2019, I enrolled in a 300+ hour Yoga Teacher Training to further explore techniques to quiet my mind and internal noise. Initially, I had no intention of teaching, but I began guiding my friends and family through sequences and was inspired by how great their minds and bodies felt after class. During my training, many of my teachers used Tingshas (small cymbals used in prayer and rituals by Tibetan Buddhist practitioners) to start and end class. Intrigued by the way their sound guided me back to my body, I decided to incorporate them into my classes, sparking a curiosity about how sound and vibration could complement my other mindfulness practices.
Fast forward to today, and I now find myself guiding hundreds of individuals from my local community and beyond through in-person and virtual sound bath meditations, yoga classes, and coaching sessions.
Mindful Modern Living emerged from my years of connecting with people from around the world and my personal journey to find strength, balance, and peace amidst internal turmoil. While each of us must do the inner work ourselves, we don’t have to face it alone. Mindful Modern Living is a place to come together as a community to share our experiences, learn through storytelling, celebrate our achievements, and support one another through challenges. Through our personalized classes, workshops, retreats, and socializing events, we create a nurturing environment where individuals can pursue healthier, more balanced, and purpose-driven lives.
