Today we’d like to introduce you to Erin Pritchard.
Hi Erin, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Therapy was a second career for me after a brief time in marketing and event planning. I knew I specifically wanted to be a trauma therapist. I completed my Master’s at The Ohio State University, one of the top graduate programs in the country for clinical counseling. I was lucky enough to be introduced to EMDR Therapy early in my career. I loved everything about EMDR and the way it helps brains heal from trauma. EMDR became my primary modality and I eventually worked my way up to be an Approved Consultant for the EMDR International Association (EMDRIA). In 2020, I decided to speed up my “5 year plan” and start private practice. I wanted to offer excellent trauma-focused therapy and unique ways of meeting clients’ needs beyond the traditional therapy hour. I always knew I wanted to call my practice “sea glass” – both after my love for the hobby of collecting sea glass, and for the incredible imagery that the creation of sea glass offers as a metaphor for healing from trauma. Around the same time, I recognized a gap in my professional community – there wasn’t anyone offering clinical sex therapy in a faith-affirming way for Christian clients. I’m passionate about bridging the divide between science and scripture. I began taking additional trainings and seeking supervision in sex therapy to add this as another specialty to my practice, and began finding ways to combine the power of EMDR and sex therapy.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s not been a smooth road, but it’s been an overall good one. I’ve tried out several different business models and feel confident that I’m on the right path for me. I’m thankful to have a deeper understanding of myself and my values as both a business owner and therapist. Clinically, I’ve been the first in Ohio to offer some unique and powerful therapy methods and paved the way for other providers to do the same. I’m really proud of that. Anytime you do something new, you’re opening yourself to criticism and the potential for failure. It’s humbling to fight those fears and do it scared. It’s rewarding to go against the grain and find what works for you.
As you know, we’re big fans of Sea Glass Counseling and Consultation. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Sea Glass is my boutique therapy and coaching practice. I’m an EMDRIA Certified EMDR Therapist and Approved Consultant, sex & relationship therapist, & Certified Fair Play Facilitator with over 10 years’ experience. I’m known for bringing the Intensive EMDR Therapy model to Ohio and for my work combining EMDR and sex therapy, particularly for Christian clients and women with pelvic pain disorders. I’ve created several clinical resources for EMDR therapists to use with purity culture survivors. In my private practice, I work with individuals and couples seeking healing from trauma and anxiety disorders; resolving relationship concerns (like sharing the mental load, or communication issues); healing from shame-based messaging about sexuality; and improving sexual functioning (like painful sex, low desire, or libido differences). I’m most proud of my role in popularizing EMDR Intensives, and for bridging a gap in the community by providing faith-affirming clinical sex therapy.
What were you like growing up?
I’ve always had a creative streak and found myself drawn to leadership roles throughout high school and college. Integrity, having fun, and community were important to me (and still are!). Growing up, I loved being in choir, working on student newspapers, playing various sports, and was drawn to anything colorful and sparkly.
