Community Highlights: Meet Ebony Jones of Glam Scents

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ebony Jones. 

Ebony, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I knew I always wanted to start a business, but at the time I really didn’t know what I wanted to do. it was until one night I came home tired and stress from work and I wanted to decompress and be to myself. So, I ran me a hot bubble bath and lit a candle with my music playing. at the time I’m just soaking and relaxing I got the lights off it was just a whole vibe. then something clicked in my mind that I should start making candles not just because I was vibing in the tub but because I know so many people could relate. I knew that I wanted to not just sell the candle but more of an experience, just like I had made in my bathroom. it’s a fact that everyone has felt stress and tired from either work or life in general so I knew that my target audience would be limitless. so, I started researching all about candles and started to test out candles to really put together how I want my candles and what I wanted my brand to stand for. I wanted my candles to look good but also smell amazing that’s where my business name Glam Scents came from. when it came to launching it took me a whole year to be in a place to where I felt comfortable putting out great quality candles. If you ask me, I didn’t think it would take that long but with all that time I gained more of a passion just by researching and testing out my candles. It was too late to just put out just anything so I always busy learning and teaching myself how to make candles, if you ever called me, I was somewhere in the basement with my apron on making candles. To pass forward to now I am in my second year of running my business which has been doing great this year so far, and I am just looking to continue to grow and learn new things for my business. 

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No is has not been a smooth road at all and I think for me is what makes running a business so interesting because you never know what is next good or bad. I can say one of my struggles is finding balance, I always felt like I should be working on my business every single day while working and going to school. I found out early that it’s okay to have off days, and that I didn’t need to be overworking myself. I am an overthinker and I am always in my head so a lot of times when I want to do something or make a new scent, I am already talking myself out of it. I felt that was kind of putting me back a little because I never gave anything a try which was putting my business at a pause because of me overthinking. 

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
My business is called Glam Scents where I hand-make candles, wax melts, and other essential needs. I am known for my customized candle gift sets that are popular around the holidays its where the customer can upload a picture and pick a fragrance for their candle which also included wax melts and lighter. What sets me apart from others is still being a student, no matter how long I have been doing this I’m going to continue to learn new things when it comes to running a business or learning new things about myself to help my business. When it comes to my brand, I am most proud of the growth, from the first time I launched to where I am now it says a lot. It takes time when it comes to running a business nothing happens overnight so you just have to have patience through it all and never give up. I know it has been timed to where I just felt like giving up because it was the easiest thing to do at the time but when I think about all the hard work, I put into my business it was a no-brainer that I was going to keep pushing through. Glam Scents is a candle business that services people who just like candles but also allowing people to know and create a vibe of their own. You can be cleaning your house and lite a candle or even drinking wine while a candle burns it all depends on the person, but I feel like a candle is a necessity you cannot go wrong with a candle at all. Glam Scents will be providing candle parties soon as well as keeping new and great quality stocked on the website. 

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Advice on networking is simply being open to meeting new people while being authentically yourself. I can say networking has worked well for me only because I met some amazing people through networking. I had a business photoshoot and I was so nervous and a little late haha overthinking and my photographer shout out to Bea photography. Thank God I was her last client for the day because we talked about so much, she encouraged throughout the whole shoot, it was just crazy because I was running late and if I didn’t make it to the shoot I wouldn’t of met her. she turned out to be an amazing person, who did an amazing job on my photos but also turned into an amazing friend. A lot of times people are scared to network which is understandable but you never know what could happen if you go to that event or sign up for a class you never know who you are going to meet.
