Today we’d like to introduce you to DJ One Tyme.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My love for DJing started when I was 17! It was 1992, My mother sent me to New York, Jamaica, Queens to be exact, to stay with my Aunt and Cousin for a couple weeks one summer. My Cousin Terrence was an aspiring DJ who grew up around some of the greatest to ever do it. He taught me the basics and showed me the equipment I would need. Once I came back home to Ohio I was hooked! I did everything I could to get my own equipment, and immediately got on to college radio at WXUT 88.3 FM at The University of Toledo.
I had my own show for about 5 years and sold mixtapes in local stores. After that time ran out, around the early 2000’s I made the move to commercial radio at The Juice FM 107.3 in Toledo. I was on air for about 17 years before leaving to venture out on my own to do corporate events, weddings, and everything a mobile DJ would do.
I’ve always done these events throughout my career, but this was the first time I made it my main source of income. Since then, I’ve been growing my business steadily. This has also meant evolving to leave bars and clubs and seek out high end venues and clients. One of the best decisions I’ve ever made!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest overall challenge is knowing when to let yourself evolve. Usually every 5 to 7 years my business takes a turn, and I feel a need to level up in some way. It started with college radio, then selling mixtapes in stores, then commercial radio. From there I did video interviews for YouTube. Streamed on Yahoo LIVE when streaming first started gaining popularity. Eventually quit commercial radio to work independently. Went to Wedding MBA in Las Vegas to level up my wedding hosting and dj skills. Added on photo booth, uplighting, karaoke and more after I mastered the wedding craft. These are all examples of having to change and evolve with the times so I wouldn’t be stale in the marketplace!
We’ve been impressed with DJ ONE TYME | HERO FOR HIRE, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’m an open format music video DJ. I save parties! I’ve been a radio personality and mix show DJ on commercial radio for over 17 years. Now I work for myself doing special events. Offering photo booth, uplighting, an adult game lounge and karaoke!
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
