Community Highlights: Meet Angel Davis of Angel Davis Aesthetics

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angel Davis.

Hi Angel, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started as a professional makeup artist. Working in my home, with a small clientele. With marketing, consistency, and word of mouth, it became a profitable business. I made the decision it was time for me to get space. I found space renting from an esthetician that welcomed me with open arms. She worked with my small budget to get me started. I will always be grateful for her kind heart and understanding, for this was all new to me. Shortly after I outgrew the space and found my own location. That is where I truly flourished, grew my clientele, and made the scary decision to quit my corporate job. It was time I bet on myself!

I knew healthy skin gives the best makeup application. When prepping the skin, I noticed many didn’t have an at-home skin care regiment. Didn’t have the education on what products would work on their specific skin type or concerns. That is when I knew I wanted to go to school to become a licensed esthetician.

I decided to try out for the free full scholarship contest with Brown Aveda. Unfortunately, I didn’t win, losing the contest didn’t stop me, so I decided to enroll in school. I didn’t know how I was going to pay for school. I was so scared and nervous. I had to partially close down my makeup business while attending school full time. With the help of my husband’s positive attitude and holding my hand throughout the process, I graduated and passed the Ohio State Board testing to receive my license!

The plan was for me to remain a makeup artist to add a little skincare education and facials every now and then. However, it was quite the opposite. I’m currently a full-time esthetician with a full clientele for skin. I’m still a makeup artist, but my skincare clients keep me booked out months in advance that it is hard for my makeup clients to get in with me.

I have my own skincare line and skin care machines for other beauty professionals to use on their clients. I offer classes for beauty professionals & business coaching to teach how to structure your business to obtain funding.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, it has not been a smooth road. Temporally shutting my makeup business to parttime to go to school was hard. I had no clue how I was going to pay for school. Running a solo esthetician practice with no one to ask questions or direct me was a lonely road. Not having my business structured correctly to get funding was a nightmare. There were times I didn’t even have the money to buy my minimum required dollar amount to stay stocked with my skincare line. I literally only had about 2 clients a week. That barely paid the rent of my space. It was hard to find further education for doing treatments on melanin skin. Not having money for continuing education once I did find it. Plus, knowing I had to still pay for school. I wanted to give up!!

Structuring your business and building your business credit is so important. Doing this correctly allows you to obtain funding for your business. Funding will allow you to furnish your business, hire an assistant, run ads on social media to get clients, get you a business vehicle, pay your rent/booth up for a few months in advance, get business line of credit, obtain business credit cards to get supplies and so much more. Do this before getting space!

Funding is one of the top reasons businesses will fail. Using all your personal money and personal credit cards to get started when you need that money to pay for personal bills will put you in a bind. That can cause you to have to choose your business or home life! Don’t put yourself in that position. You can have both! I offer business coaching sessions for this very reason. Been there done that.
