Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Hhudock.
Hi Amanda, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I became certified as a personal trainer when I was a senior at Ohio State University in 2016. I initially wanted to teach group fitness, but I found a passion for working with clients 1:1 and teaching them the power of movement. I began training at the university gym and taught TRX suspension, training classes. From there, I moved to Cincinnati and began training clients at UC’s gym, and taught Bootcamp and HIIT classes. It was here I developed a passion for training small groups of 2-6 people. I loved the connection you could make while working out within a community. I appreciated the relationships with my 1:1 clients and their individual needs, and I loved the communities I experienced through group fitness and small group training. When I moved to Cleveland, I began teaching in Cleveland schools full time and stopped training. I missed it instantly, so I applied to work at a local gym, Tremont Athletic Club. I began teaching classes there, and I still teach 1x a week to this day. This is where I developed my love for kettlebell training. I taught kettlebell classes weekly and eventually invested in my own kettlebell coaches to learn and master the technique, foundations, and skills of the movement. After 3-4 years of training with kettlebells, I finally became a certified Russian Kettlebell coach in January 2022.
I began Amanda Hudock Training LLC, my small training business in Spring 2021. I had this motive to be my own business for years, but it took me a pandemic and a lot of coaching to have the confidence and knowledge to do so. I am officially over one year in my business, have expanded my offers, and have reached people local to Cleveland and across the country through virtual training. My current offers include 1:1 personal training, small group training, individualized online programming, Club Kettlebell (my online kettlebell program), and in-person/online conditioning classes.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting your own business is never a smooth road, at least from my experience and the experience of others I have spoken with. The most challenging part is managing working both IN the business (training) and on the business (marketing, programming, creative work). When your business is mostly marketed through Instagram, it can feel very challenging to find new clients and market yourself. In addition to managing and trying to grow this small business, I still work a 40-hour/week full-time job. As much as I love training, working a full-time job with a brand new very small business is draining. You have to continue to put in the work, even on the days you are exhausted, tired, and unmotivated. Finding balance in work and personal life is a must, and something I am working on to this day.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I am a certified personal trainer, Russian kettlebell coach, and registered yoga teacher. I began Amanda Hudock Training LLC, a small training business, in April 2021. I offer 1:1 personal training, small group personal training, individualized online training programs, in-person and online weekly live classes, and an online group program called Club Kettlebell. A few times a year I host events and workshops around the Cleveland community and hope to continue growing. I market through my email list, and Instagram, and try to get my name out through mediums like this + word of mouth.
My philosophy behind the training is that every adult is an athlete, so we all need to learn how to move and train like an athlete. As athletes we are training for longer and healthier life, all of us should have goals to increase our performance (daily activities of living) and reduce the risk of injury and/or daily pain. I train clients to become stronger and more conditioned for their lives through strength training and athletic conditioning. My clients all learn and practice athletic skills and drills (e.g., jumping, hopping, single leg work), kettlebell skills and exercises, barbell exercises, dumbbell exercises, and bodyweight movements.
I train out of Ohio City, areas local to Cleveland, and virtually through Zoom.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
In the next five years, I would love to see my business grow to reach more adults and change their self-image to see themselves as athletes. I want to continue to offer both 1:1 and group training services. I’d like to expand my business to train at a local gym in the next few years. The idea of opening my own training space has crossed my mind, but I will have to see where life takes me in the next few years. The fitness industry is evolving to become more virtual, but people still love to train in person, so I plan to continue to offer both options as well as hybrid.
