Today we’d like to introduce you to Ta’shona Gibson
Hi Ta’Shona, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My love for beauty started in my bedroom. I practiced makeup looks on myself in my spare time and eventually that lead to me leaving college to focus on gaining my esthetics license. I have the wonderful opportunity to work as a lead esthetician in a salon and spa formerly located in Worthington and Ulta Beauty, as well as being a makeup artist for MAC Cosmetics. On the side I collaborated with local artists and designers to really dive deeper into creative beauty. As I got older my love for makeup was still there but skincare really became my focus and is the reason I am here today, creating content and educating women who look like me on how to truly care for themselves as well as their skin. My goal now is to build community in the online space where I see Im needed the most, Black Women are such a huge part of the beauty industry, as consumers and practitioners, yet still we are underrepresented in production as well as marketing. I stand in the gap, relating and educating as much as I possibly can.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey has been a great one but it hasn’t always been the easiest to navigate. Being an independent contractor providing services has its advantages but its costly, I have always balanced my career in beauty with working a full time job because I had to. In the field of esthetics you don’t see much of yourself, as a Black women, in text books and learning materials so that created a barrier as well. Most of my clientele are Black women and they look to me for answers on things that specifically effect them, I have had to do a lot of my own research and advocating via the online space.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My licensing is in Advanced Esthetics, I am licensed to perform advanced facial treatments and recommend professional treatments. While I am not currently using my license in the spa, I am using it through my career as a beauty content creator and educator. My speciality is creating routines that work, plane and simple. I love using social media as a way to educate women on safe skincare practices as well as how to be better consumers, choosing brands that align not only with your skins needs but with your life style as well. I would say I am most proud of how I have been able to work with clients all over the world by way of virtual consultations, I set up software on my website that allowed people to meet with me visually and completely restructure their skincare routines so that they actually start seeing results. You’d be surprised just how much this has helped people, skin and beauty can be deeply personal, people appreciate having someone who is willing to share what they know and not just push products. I believe my personality sets me apart, my level of care and desire for genuine community an connection.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I have definitely been at the right place at the right time many times throughout my career. My readiness combined with a bit of luck is why I have had the chance to transitions jobs so smoothly in the field of beauty, it has also helped me meet people who were able to pour into me as a person and elevate me as a beauty professional. I have benefitted for others walking in their purpose so much, maybe that is luck.
