Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Pierce.
Hi Sarah, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have always loved jewelry and started stringing beads on shoelaces as a toddler. I kept up my love of creating jewelry with beads and in high school, I had the opportunity to take a basic metalsmithing class. Once I took it, I knew what I wanted to do. I wanted to keep working with this new medium that I had fallen in love with. I went to the Cleveland Institute of Art and majored in Jewelry and Metals. After graduating I started working as bench jeweler for another company while slowly building my own line and design sense. I took the plunge and started my own company, Pierce Jewelry, 6 years ago. I have a strong love of nature and draw most of my inspiration for my jewelry from it.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I feel like starting your own business is a constant learning curve. Figuring out what shows are the best fit your work and understanding the constantly changing algorithm of social media are a big one. The entire year of 2020 was another big roadblock. I felt like I had really started to hit my stride and made some major leaps in 2019 and then the bottom dropped out in 2020. There were no shows and I had to really switch gears to focus more on the online side of things.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
One of the biggest aspects of my work is the signature leaf shape. Just about every piece of jewelry that I create has a leaf detail somewhere, sometimes it’s as simple as the jump ring in the chain. I draw my inspiration from nature. It influences the colors that I use along with the hammer texture I create on the pieces. I’ve also recently started incorporating vitreous enamel into my work. It’s another way the bring in the nature imagery and color.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I like that everything is within driving and/or walking distance and that it strongly supports the arts. As to dislikes, I hate rush hour and the traffic jams it creates.
