Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Khoury.
Hi Nicole, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, let’s briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
As an elected Judge in Toledo Municipal Court, I bring justice by day. But when the sun sets, I transform into the frontwoman of the Toledo based rock band, Arctic Clam, bringing the house down with our music. I’m also the Founder of Project iAm, a unique initiative that started as a one-time event, Acoustics for Autism. This event was aimed at raising money for families living with Autism Spectrum Disorders. The overwhelming success of the event led to the creation of a 501c3, and we have now held 17 Acoustics for Autism events on the first Sunday of March each year. Since our inception, we have distributed over one million dollars to families living with ASD in our area.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Acoustics for Autism has ergonomically grown. We have a great group of volunteers who work together to keep figuring out new ways to expand this overgrown day while still holding to our mission and our loyalty to those who helped us get where we are.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
On a personal level, I am a Judge of the Toledo Municipal Court, a role that I am deeply committed to. Project iAm/Acoustics for Autism is my passion project, a 100% volunteer-based initiative that feels like a full-time job at times. I am driven by the desire to help people navigate through the justice system, always striving to find the right balance between punishment and recidivism. This is a challenge I embrace every day.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Be open and honest and communicate. Nothing is worse than a person presuming they know what’s happening because they are too scared or timid to ask questions.
