Check Out Meredith Wolfe’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meredith Wolfe.

Meredith Wolfe

Hi Meredith, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
In high school, I was part of my school’s agricultural education program and learned all about horticulture and floral design. I competed in competitions through our school’s FFA chapter regionally and nationally. Due to this experience, I attended The Ohio State University to be an Agricultural Education Teacher, which is my full-time job. I am blessed to have taken over the program that I went through at my very own high school. I started doing florals for family members and friends for their weddings. Eventually, more and more people started asking me to do events for them, and I started my small business, Meregold Creations. I chose the name of my business as a play on words and my name (Meredith) but also because of an important lesson I try to instill in my students. There are two types of people- marigolds and walnuts. Marigolds are great companion plants; they are supposed to ward away pests and help surrounding plants grow successfully. Walnut trees, on the other hand, emit a substance from their roots that prevents other plants from growing around them as a survival method. This lesson is important for students to understand as they should strive to be “marigolds” or nourish the relationships around them, be open-minded and positive rather than a “walnut,” and bring people down around them. I, on the same page, use this motto in my business and therefore named my business as such. I currently do florals for events such as weddings, baby and bridal showers, funerals, and others. I offer arch rentals with macrame inserts and balloon arches, and most recently, I have added flower bars to my offerings. The bars have become popular at showers where guests can choose from a variety of florals to make their own bud vase to take home as their takeaway gift. I have become known for my arch setups, and my most popular floral designs have been my most unique floral and color choices. I’ve been doing florals for 10+ years in various aspects, but my business has taken shape over the last 5 years.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I think any small business owner would tell you that there are always struggles along the way, and I’m no different. I would love to take on more weddings, but labor and time are limited. As I am a full-time teacher, I am limited by time. I also have been learning as time rolls on specifically in business aspect such as pricing and keeping up with floral trends.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am known for my unique floral design, specifically large arrangements such as arches, hanging installments, and bouquets. My arrangements are known for unique floral and color choices, which sets me apart from other florists. I recently started floral bars in which event planners have rented my flower bar stand, and I set up an area in which guests at showers or other events can make their own bud vases to take home. In terms of uniqueness, I am proud of providing items that other florists do not, such as glowing corsages and boutonnieres for prom and homecomings. The majority of my business consists of wedding florals that take place in Northwest Ohio, but I have done weddings into Southeast Michigan and into Northeast Ohio. I have done some silk bouquets for destination weddings as well.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
In high school, I was part of my school’s Agricultural Education program, which is how I got where I am. I was always very driven and motivated, and I believe that contributed to my accomplishments today. I was always interested in nature, being outside, and learning about things like biology and natural resources.
