Check Out Maxine’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maxine.

Hi Maxine, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello, my name is Maxine Nangalia and I am the owner of MJ Hair Studio & Skin Lab. This journey began with a dream that the Lord placed in my heart in 2014, a vision for a place where beauty and compassion come together. One year later, in March 2015, we opened our doors. Through His promise, I have seen incredible mentors and team members come into my life, and their support has been a true blessing.

At MJ’s, we cherish the small moments. We serve our clients with open hearts and welcome them into what we see as our sanctuary. My team is my family. Each person brings a unique talent that lifts our spirit as a whole. When clients tell us, “It feels warm and comforting here,” it reassures us that we are living our purpose. This is more than a business. It is my ministry.

Every day, I feel blessed to walk through our doors. We share in each other’s celebrations and offer support in hard times. Our motto, “Be Your Own Kind of Beauty,” reminds us that real beauty comes from kindness and compassion.

As we look ahead, we are committed to lifting up the next generation and helping them grow and shine in this beautiful industry.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
By no means has it been smooth sailing. Over these ten years, this journey has brought both peaks and valleys. But through it all, I’m deeply grateful because every challenge has helped shape me as a leader.

Surviving the pandemic was one of the most difficult and transformational experiences. We were closed for eight weeks, and that period tested everything. I’m thankful that I had been conservative with my finances. To stay afloat, I sold take-home root touch-up packages. The kindness and generosity of our guests during that time is something I will never forget or take for granted.

Even in the fear and uncertainty, there was a silver lining. The pandemic brought business owners in our industry together. We held Zoom meetings, brainstorming what reopening would look like during COVID. It forced me to rethink how I ran the business from the ground up.

We were among the last to be legally allowed to reopen, and it was tough. But with faith, community, and resilience, we got through it.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I have been a barber stylist for over 25 years, an educator for 15 years, and a business owner for 10 years. My background in barbering has shaped my specialty in precision cutting. I especially enjoy razor cuts and creating shapes that grow out beautifully with time.

While I love the art of styling, my heart truly lies in education. I have a deep passion for mentoring stylists who are just beginning their careers. Being able to give back to the next generation and help elevate this industry brings me great joy and purpose.

What matters most to you? Why?
My faith is the most important part of my life. Through my faith, I am able to serve others with purpose, live in the moment, and lead with compassion. It guides how I show up each day as a loving mom, a supportive friend, and a committed leader.
