Check Out Matt Erickson’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Erickson.

Hi Matt, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When I was a child, I spent most of my time dreaming up stories. As I grew up, though, I realized I wanted to find a way not only to tell stories but to be a part of them. While pursuing a degree in journalism, I studied abroad in Paris and worked for a magazine. During that time, I connected with a few bloggers and artists who became my first ever clients. Slowly I began to wonder if photography might have a more significant role to play in my life.

I started building my business upon my return to the States. I fell in love with the fact that photography allows me to be a part of the most significant moments in my clients’ lives and document their greatest stories.

Nearly seven years have passed since then, and while the pandemic certainly threw a wrench in things, I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Today I am more confident than ever that this is what I am supposed to be doing with my life.

TLDR: I studied abroad in Paris and worked for a magazine there in 2014, started Matt Erickson Photography in 2015, my wife Amanda and I got married in 2016, we bought a house in 2019, and adopted two kitties, Hugo and Orion, during the pandemic. We have begun to put roots down in the Cleveland area, and I am excited to continue to deepen them.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has not been a smooth or linear road at all. Being a small business owner can be incredibly lonely. There are times when I have been full of self-doubt, days where I don’t think I have accomplished anything, but as I look back on where I started, I can see the progress and that re-inspires me. It’s simultaneously encouraging and humbling to see how far I have come.

One of the significant challenges has been figuring out what I want to be known for as a photographer and if that specific vision will actually be profitable. I’ve worked hard to craft imagery and a brand that will attract the kind of couples who value artistry and connection above anything else.

The confidence and belief required to stay committed to that vision have been challenging, especially with the financial uncertainty that being self-employed entails.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I have learned that a beautiful image has less to do with what I bring to the day and more with who the couple is willing to let me see. My commitment to building a real relationship with my clients and creating magic from that is what sets me apart.

My imagery & approach are perfect for couples who cherish the ceremony but may jump in the pool afterward to celebrate. I love working with people who are both refined & revelrous. Those who know the significance of the promise they are making also want to significantly celebrate the occasion.

While my process for creating wedding artwork has evolved over years of experience, the foundation has always been an authentic connection.

This deeply intentional approach has developed over years of shooting on film. The colors, depth, and essence that film can produce are unparalleled. These attributes have directly influenced our artistic yet timeless style. I believe stories deserve to be photographed beautifully.

How do you define success?
Any time I can look back and say, “They will show this image to their grandkids” or “That image speaks volumes about the couple,” I know I have succeeded in my job.

If my work can be the catalyst for couples to fondly reminisce about the beginning of their lives together and help them fall in love all over again, I’ll retire a happy man.
