Check Out Kevaun, The Sunflower’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevaun, The Sunflower

Hi Kevaun,, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As a child, I knew I wanted to become a part of the world of entertainment. I would watch Barney and I wanted to both meet the purple dinosaur and be on camera! I had a home computer and would go on Windows Movie Maker to make outlines of films and TV shows I envisioned in my head. I wrote plays for various events like summer camp or church. Church was the place I learned about media, from sound to video cameras.

And now I am twenty four years of age, still creating fun meaningful content for people to enjoy even twenty years from now.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I wish I could tell everyone that this journey was smooth sailing, but that is not the case here. The biggest struggle that I have is overthinking so much. There are so many ideas I NEED to put out to the world, but overthinking creeps her way in and I forget all about it. But just like many obstacles and challenges in life, we can overcome this one!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a actor, writer, singer, songwriter, podcaster, editor, and filmmaker. I came on the scene as an re-enactor of many characters and TV personalities, but more so leaning into my original content like The Big Worded Friend and Conversations with Artist While Listening to Music Series.

I also have two podcast shows! The first is entitled The Sunflower Garden Podcast. (2022) This show is about advice I’ve given to myself over the years and share it with my beautiful sunflowers who NEEDS to hear positive affirmations in their life. We just wrapped up Season 2 on my birthday (August 4th) The second show is entitled The Liberation of Black Music Podcast. It debuted earlier this year and this is where I discuss Black artists that don’t get enough credit for their contributions to the music industry. I also play games with my friends (like This or That? or Versus) and interview upcoming Black artists, musicians, and/or producers on their journeys into music!

I am most proud of my project I released in September 2023 entitled Live Laugh Sunflowers. We did a live show for the first anniversary and it was so much fun!

I believe what sets me apart from others is how intentional I am when it comes to anything I do. I want my content to make someone laugh at themselves, think about themselves, and reflect on what they can do to become better people. The Kevaun, the Sunflower brand is all about creating a safe space for everyone to be heard. That’s all I want.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I took a big risk this year by going back to school! I am enrolled at Full Sail University achieving a Bachelors of Science in Digital Cinematography. It was the best risk I have ever taken. I’m learning so much about the technical and business aspects of films and TV and it has made such a difference in my way of telling a story!

I’m learning that taking risks are what makes life worth living! If we begin to feel comfortable in what we do right now, we may never grow and evolve. Yes, risks are scary. But when we finally step out on faith and do it, that risk will become the best decision we ever made. And the start of my journey into risk-taking was answering the call of the school.
