Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelsey Allen.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started photography nine years ago when I became a mom. It began with a camera that cost just a couple hundred dollars, and was simply my way of making sure I had beautiful, high-quality photographs of my firstborn son throughout his childhood.

As my skills grew, so did my passion for preserving life’s fleeting moments. What started as capturing memories for my own family has grown into a career where I’ve had the privilege of documenting and preserving memories for hundreds of families across Ohio and West Virginia.

Today, I specialize in maternity, newborn, and family photography, creating timeless images that tell each family’s unique story. I know firsthand how quickly the seasons of parenthood pass, and it’s an incredible honor to provide families with photographs that allow them to relive those moments for years to come.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I don’t think any small business journey is ever completely smooth, and mine certainly hasn’t been. The one thing that *has* been consistent is my willingness to adapt. Photography is an art that’s constantly evolving, and so am I. My editing style, client experience, workflow, and even the way I approach sessions have all changed over the years because I learn something from every family I photograph.

On a personal level, my business has carried me through some of life’s biggest transitions, including a divorce. It gave me the flexibility I had always wanted so I could be present for my boys and play an active role in their childhood while still building a career I love.

Looking back, I wouldn’t say the road has been smooth, but I would say it’s been incredibly rewarding. Every challenge has taught me something, and every season—both personally and professionally—has shaped the photographer and business owner I am today.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in maternity, newborn, and family photography, with a focus on creating timeless, emotion-filled images that tell a family’s story. While beautiful portraits are important, my goal is to capture the genuine connection between parents and their children—the little glances, giggles, and moments that often become the most treasured memories.

One thing I’m most proud of is the experience I provide. I know preparing for family photos can feel overwhelming, especially for moms, so I’ve intentionally created a process that removes as much stress as possible. From helping style the entire family to offering access to my client closet, I want my clients to feel taken care of from the moment they book until they receive their final gallery.

What sets me apart is that I don’t expect children to sit perfectly still or smile on command. Some of the most meaningful images happen in the in-between moments—when a child is laughing, exploring, or snuggling up with their parents. My sessions are relaxed and child-led, allowing families to simply enjoy being together while I preserve those memories in a way that feels authentic.

More than anything, I’m proud that families trust me to document some of the most meaningful seasons of their lives. Knowing that the photographs I create will be cherished not just today, but by future generations, is something I never take for granted.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My biggest piece of advice is simple: don’t give up. Building a business takes time, and success rarely happens overnight. You truly get out of it what you’re willing to put into it. Be willing to work hard, stay curious, and never stop learning.

If I could tell my younger self one thing, it would be to invest in myself sooner. You are worth investing in. Find photographers whose work inspires you, take workshops, ask questions, and never assume you’ve learned everything there is to know. The photographers who continue to grow are the ones who are always refining their craft and pushing themselves to improve. Investing in education and in yourself will set you apart and give you the confidence and skills to continue growing.

Most importantly, remember that it’s a marathon, not a sprint. There will be seasons that are challenging, but if you’re passionate about what you do and committed to the long haul, the journey is incredibly rewarding.
