Check Out Juliana Shun’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Juliana Shun.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
When I was growing up, I was never into fashion as much as I am now. It was really a moment of taking a risk. I was at Cleveland State University in 2018 and they had just cut my program. While feeling hopeless a notification popped up through Instagram that Parsons School of Design was doing a yearlong course for Fashion Industry Essentials. I was starting to develop a love for fashion so I filled out the application and got into the program. I had just started to experiment with my personal style and taking this course changed my life. I was not very into social media at the time, however, I still had awareness that my industry resides on social media. As nervous as I was to start documenting my outfits, style, and personality a friend of mine told me if you are going to really pursue this, you have got to take the risk and give it your all. From then on, the rest is history. I aim to inspire others to wear what they want and not to be afraid of others’ opinions on fashion. I’m all about expressing your personal style! It just shows how unique we are and it’s an expression of art.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There are times where the road is smooth and there are times where the road is rough. Social media can take a toll on one’s personal health. Sometimes it’s hard not to compare yourself to others, the algorithm not liking your content, not experiencing the same growth, and always second-guessing yourself. I constantly remind myself to be authentically me and to take breaks when it comes to social media. Finding my personal style took a very long time as well. After I discovered my personal style, the road became smooth from there on out!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I currently work at a nonprofit thrift store called Common Threads Thrift. I specialize in clothing, jewelry, vintage, and other accessories. It’s a great place for me to work because of my fashion knowledge and growing up my Mother made jewelry for a living so I was always around jewelry. I am very big on sustainability and studying sustainability in fashion so working at a nonprofit thrift store was a match made in heaven! I also run my own depop store to share my closet with others and to give others a chance to thrift who might not be very close to thrift stores.

Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I am one for not always stepping out of my comfort zone. So, creating a fashion Instagram was really a groundbreaking moment for me. I started to experiment with lighting, angles, cameras, and my fashion. What I wear is not what an average Ohioan would typically wear. The best way to describe it is I look like a unicorn! But I love to stand out with my fashion and be expressive even if it comes with stares! To me, it’s worth it to be your authentic self regardless of what others think.
