Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh Gall.
Hi Josh, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
In 2019/2020, I moved to Louisville KY for a new job and was introduced to EDM by new friends i had made there. They showed me so many different genres of EDM and had even taken me to my first festival (Breakaway, Ohio) which was one of the best nights of my life. The music blew my mind. It was one of those emotional, mentally changing experiences that I needed in my life. After a year of nightclubs, edm shows and new experiences,
I had gained interest in Djing. I bought my first small starter DJ Controller and started practicing as a Dubstep DJ. I eventually reached out of my comfort zone to play at some local venues. Not too shortly after, Covid eventually shut everything down and we were all quarantined at home, so I bought Ableton (a music creation software) and started working on making original music. Fast forward to 2021/2022 As Covid started to lift, I saw opportunities in Cincinnati to learn about the behind the scene workings of shows. Stage setup and breakdown, door tickets, and opportunities to connect with others. At the time I was debating on buying a house in Louisville or leaving for Cincinnati to chase my dreams. So I packed up and left to pursue what I wanted.
During this transition I has also grown interest in being an open-format DJ, which is someone who plays a mix of many different genres (throwbacks, top 40, sing alongs, ect. these will normally be your bar / club Djs) As I was settling into Cincinnati, I became friends with Dani and Darik Klepper (Both amazing Local House/Techno djs) who introduced me Jason McGlothlin (DJ Identity) who has been open-format DJing for over 20 years, (and one of the best Djs around) I would go hang out, watch, ask questions and support his gigs. I learned how turntables worked, how to read a room, when to use certain styles of songs, and to keep the floor moving. Eventually, Jason pushed me to mix on the spot, and gave me pointers on the fly during a busy room (a great way to learn fast) This fast-paced lesson caused me to quickly grow as a DJ and artist, and to find out what worked and didnt work for the crowd.
Eventually, I earned my way to playing all around Cincinnati with a majority of my open format gigs being with 4EG, a company that runs venues that I perform at Venues like Stretch, Roosevelt Room, Righteous Room, Beeline, and Japps. My personal favorite to play at is Japps. Each Venue is unique, has great energy, all are in amazing locations and and I enjoy being at each one of them. Not only are the venues great but the staff at each venue are always kind and great to talk to. Another notable venue is Philanthropub. If your looking for a Venue with really great lighting and sound and crowd energy this is the venue to be at especially if you’re wanting both open format and EDM.
At this point I started to seperate Intrasy (my EDM alias) and Started Djing as DJ Josh Gall (my open format name)
As time progressed and I learned more about music production i eventually fell out of being dubstep only under the Intrasy project and but eventually fell into what I envisioned the Intrasy project to be.
I spent a lot of time and effort practicing, learning, taking lessons, and understanding. In 2021-2022 I released my first few songs and an EP. I played Local venues around Cincinnati Including special events at Mad Frog, at Thompson house when I opened for Bass artist Jantsen, Madison live when I opened for Bass artist DMVU, and have played silent discos/stages at Electric Forest, Summer Camp, Break away festival and beyond the void Festival.
I take a lot of time to put together ideas, and sets, and try to come up with the best performances for the listener. I care the most about how the music flows and how the listener experiences the set. After my first EP release and a few singles, right now I’m working on taking new lessons that are going to greatly enhance my skills and knowledge. Currently looking to see what 2023 will look like for me. I have also launched a website that is still in the progress of being built
The Intrasy project is just not about music though. It’s also meant to be about creating a safe, creative, welcoming space for anyone and everyone, it’s about spreading a positive message, spreading peace and love, and community. We are privileged to be here and gifted with the life we have. I wanted to create something more than just the music to reflect the gift we have and to give back what was given to me.
I have also started doing photography to add onto my skill set which will be available on my website! I will showcase landscapes, venues, shows, things of that nature.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has been very interesting, to say the least. It hasn’t been smooth but it hasn’t been a struggle. I’d say for all that I have accomplished I’m very blessed for sure. I’d say the biggest struggle is growing a genuine fan base, growing my brand and business, and trying to figure out the next step to improve myself.
Social media algorithms can sometimes be an issue when trying to get decent reach to share my work. I have found the most success in earning genuine fans and friends have always been when people see me in person vs social media.
I am very thankful for all the people I have met thus far.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Whenever I walk in to set up for the night I’ll scan the room to determine how I’m going to start the night and what ill play. I tend to start with some disco/indie house and throwbacks and then ill build up the night to popular 2000s, House, sing-alongs, current Hip Hop and current hits, Top 40s, and anything to get the ladies to dance and sing along to (who doesn’t like ABBA???) near the last 30 minutes of the night.
I like to calm it down depending on how busy it is and play slower dance music and RnB. A normal set is 4 hours for open format, so I will normally try to keep the room rotating. I’ll start with lower energy and build it up to get the whole bar dancing. After some time of doing that ill reset the energy back down to give people some time to get drinks or to relax and then I build it back up. Rinse and repeat. This all depends on busy the venue in as I get there. If its packed out ill start playing popular music that I would normally try to save for later in the night.
I do not limit myself to rules or expectations.. Especially in EDM, I will play any sub-genre, at any tempo, while trying to make it flow naturally. I try to take people on an up-and-down journey. My style is consistent with heavy bass lines, euphoric elements, and head-nodding grooves. I tend to mix heavy experimental, DNB, down/dream tempo, and breakbeats. I love sounds that build up and hit you with bass and give you energy and make you dance, I also love sounds that surround your head with Uplifting Euphoria that puts a smile on your face. I try to focus on storytelling and taking my audience on a journey in some way or another.
I think the thing that sets me apart from others is my ability to navigate the world of club / open format djing while balancing and focusing my passion for bass music. My hunger and drive to perfect my craft and to grow as an artist are very strong, and I have an extreme desire to connect with my fan base, other DJs, and other producers and to connect with the venues I perform at and the staff that I work with. I’m willing to go far and beyond to promote all shows and venues, help out when needed and that I support everyone as much as I can.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you, or support you?
If you want to support me, come out to my shows! Share my Flyers, Song announcements, and the songs themselves. Coming out to support and even bringing friends not only makes me happy but can also be a great way to make new fans. And sharing anything I announce can make a huge difference in beating social media algorithms and sometimes sharing something can reach others who may have never heard of me.
I’m happy if I’m playing to 1 person or playing too many! I am super easy to reach and a great communicator, if anyone is interested in working or collaborating, just reach out to any of my socials and hit me up!!
