Today we’d like to introduce you to John Thomas.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I first got started DJing about 2 years ago because I had always loved music and had a great ear for it, but DJing always seemed very intimidating to me. Around this time, I was scrolling on Facebook Marketplace and found a great deal on a DJ controller, so I thought to myself, Why not just buy it and get started learning. I bought the controller, rushed home, and instantly started practicing. I watched hours of YouTube videos, reached out to DJ friends, took every chance I could to watch other DJs, and practiced every single day. As time progressed, I just kept practicing my craft, taking it seriously, and getting better. Eventually, once I felt my skills were up to par, I began to book gigs and was absolutely rocking there. Now here I am today, staying booked and busy, traveling, and continuing to be a sponge.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has not been smooth at all. The DJ path can be very frustrating, challenging, and discouraging. From troubles learning how to mix, beat match, scratch, etc, it can be daunting. There were moments of self-doubt, wondering if it was really for me, and comparing myself to other DJs. It is also frustrated with not getting the gigs that I want but it is all just fuel to the fire and pushes me to keep going, keep practicing, and keep marketing myself.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a DJ that specializes in Hip Hop, Rap, and R&B; however, I am very versatile in my styles and mixing. I am known for my ability to get the crowd going and my ability to keep the crowd on their toes. I am most proud of my journey, and what sets me apart from others is that I can play a multitude of genres from Rap to Country.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I feel like being open to criticism, realizing there is always something I left that I can learn, and being willing to step outside of my comfort zone have been the most important keys to my success.
