Today we’d like to introduce you to Joanne Wu.
Joanne, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I came to America in 2004 and was given the opportunity to work in the restaurant business in Fairlawn called House of Hunan. There I worked under the guidance of my mentor chef Lawrence Suen (owner and executive chef at House of Hunan). Working with him was a great learning experience, and I was able to learn many techniques and dishes and then was able to put my own twist in. After 40 years of hard and devoted work, my mentor chef Suen retired and closed the doors to House of Hunan Fairlawn, so in 2022, I was able to open Plum.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Moving to America and leaving my family has been a challenge, but I try to stay positive by doing what I love most, which is cooking and creating new dishes and rolls.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I am proud of what I have accomplished in the 18 years I’ve been in America. I believe what sets us apart from others is the quality and service of our dishes. We have a wide variety of unique dishes with homemade sauces
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Favorite childhood memory is going to the street food markets in Taiwan and experiencing such a variety of foods. That’s where a lot of my inspiration came from
