Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica and Jonny Casey.
Jessica and Jonny, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
We had worked together previously at a salon in West Chester, after both of us had left there we reconnected and ended up starting a family some years later. After working at a salon in Norwood together we decided to open our own salon. We had a 1-year-old and a second baby on the way, and knew it was time to do what would be best for our family’s future. We came across the spot by Findlay Market and couldn’t pass it up. After a lot of hard work, the rest is history!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Getting started was of course a challenge. We were working 7 days a week to save up enough money to open a salon. Jessie was very pregnant, and actually ended up having our second baby a week after we opened Wüf. She went back to work 3 days after he was born, and he came to work with us every day until he was old enough to start daycare! Grooming is a really physically taxing job, and it was hard finding the balance between that, parenting, and the general responsibilities that come along with owning a business. As the kids got a bit older, we spent a lot of time at Children’s Hospital, We discovered that both of our boys are autistic, which was a learning curve for us as new parents. We were constantly running back and forth between appointments for them, and the salon. Most days, it felt like we were hardly keeping our head above water. Finding employees wasn’t the easiest task, but once we found some amazing help it has been smooth sailing. It has been wonderful being able to step back a little now that we have groomers. It has been a gift to be more present with our kids while the salon is still fully functioning on the days we aren’t there. The other mentionable challenge has been trying to give clients a better understanding of our concept at Wüf. We are a kennel free facility and offer a totally different type of service than most are used to, meaning the pricing point is relatively higher than other spas. We include lots of extras in our base pricing, like nail grinding, conditioners, higher quality shampoos, and more. Over time with a lot of marketing techniques, we feel we have built something really great. People have started to seek out Wüf, specifically because of the unique services we have to offer.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Grooming is definitely an art form, which is really cool because we get to do two things we love, work with dogs, and be artistic. After many years of seeing how other facilities work, we knew exactly how we wanted to run our own business. Our goal was to offer a premier pet spa with top of the line products and quality. We specialize in longer trims, breed specific haircuts, and even creative grooming. Creative grooming is something you won’t find in every grooming salon. We use pet safe dye, with this we have turned pups into candy corn for the holiday, and even have temporary color wash shampoos. We’ve done everything from making a fluffy dog look like a galaxy, to turning a dog into a summer watermelon. Seeing their owners face when they are finished is always so fun! Jonny is most proud of the fact that each one of our stylists have their own niche and as a salon we are one of the most well-rounded as a team.
Jessie is incredibly proud of the passion she sees from the employees, we all have our own dogs that we work within our free time, whether that be AKC dog shows, grooming competitions, or just making our dog colorful on the weekends for fun. This is always more than just a job to us, and that sets us all apart from a typical big box store.
How do you think about happiness?
I’d have to say for both of us, it has been incredibly humbling to see our business take off the way it has. We knew we had talent, but we never could have guessed a few short years into this we would have won multiple awards, and be at full capacity with staff. Watching this business flourish into something we can possibly hand down to our kids is just nothing short of a dream come true.
