Today we’d like to introduce you to Ethan Shun.
Hi Ethan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started making beats when I was around 14 years old. I had been drumming since I was a kid and always saw these beat videos, so I wanted to start making them. This really opened the door to a whole other world. Every day I would get home from school and work on music, trying to improve. I was working a high school job so I could start investing in myself and buying some gear. I then started working for a DJ company when I was around 16 which really helped me expand my musical resume and gave me important experience in the performance/setup side of live events. Currently, I attend The Ohio State University, where I am pursuing a degree in Environmental Science. In Columbus Ohio, I DJ almost every weekend at local bars and clubs. I release my own music under the artist name Edizzy which is electronic-based. I also produce for multiple artists, mix, and make compositions for other artists to sample. Right now, I am releasing a new collection of my own electronic music over the course of the next year. One of my favorite projects I am working on right now is a YouTube series called ‘Beats and Friends’ where artists, producers, and creatives get in the studio and make some amazing music. The goal of this series is to highlight all the amazing music we have in Ohio.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the best pieces of advice I have gotten when it comes to the music industry is that it’s messy. Creatives today more than ever face so much criticism and not to mention their own self-doubt. I think a constant challenge is how do we create enough content to be noticed but also not feel creatively drained. This question used to put me in a state of analysis paralysis and took a while to really figure out, but even then, I still find myself falling into doubt.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a music producer based out of Columbus, Ohio. I release electronic music under the name Edizzy and produce for various other artists. Because I am an independent artist, I do everything from production, mixing and mastering, graphic design, and content creation. I am kind of the stereotype do-it-yourself music producer. I think what sets me apart from other people is the authenticity in my art. For a long time, I struggled with trying to make music that wasn’t really authentic to me. I think the realization of this helped me become more patient and helped me give myself over to the musical journey and not fight which way it is taking me.
Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
My perspective on risk is that greatness comes with risk-taking. Putting yourself out there in front of a crowd or posting something new and exciting is risky, but it is also how you grow and become a better artist/person.
